Run Windows on iPad using remote-computing apps

By Michael Lasky

Windows users may dismiss Apple’s new ultra-light, ultra-sleek iPad as just another frivolous toy for Mac heads.

But add remote-computing software and services, and the iPod’s combination of light weight and nicely-sized screen make Apple’s pad a dandy Windows terminal.

Regarding the issue of having to have a password for remote access, I had the same issue, and overcame it by the Tweakui setting to automatically log in.

Cheers

I use RealVNC and find that it has most of the good features mentioned in the review and almost none of the bad ones. You do have to make a port-forwarding entry in your router, but that’s not a big deal.
I find the virtual mouse & keyboard available on the iPad end to be very useful. File transfers are easy.
Also, I’ve learned that adjusting the resolution on the PC being controlled does wonders for viewability on the iPad. I have to do very little zooming in/out to see things.

What resolution works the best? Some detailed help just may be appreciated here.

I use Microsoft’s free RDC client, RDC103en.bin, on my MacBookPro. It should work on the iPad too.

One issue I’ve found with the MS free RDC client is that it’s really a resource hog. The whole lashup runs a lot faster/smoother with RealVNC or one of the Apps mentioned in this article.

Predicated on a PC to leave on plus the profligate purchase of an iPad to control the abandoned PC… what’s wrong with this picture?

While this premise may be beneficial in some cases, I would suggest it will rarely prove efficient or cost effective. I recently read of just such an naive implementation in a medical office. I say naive because the real challenge has nothing to do with hardware and actually is further encumbered by the awkwardness of learning a new interface on top of trying to adjust to documenting everything in a manner that will satisfy the ever changing Medicare reimbursement requirements. Given the reality of out of control health care costs, how does adding a further expense improve the bottom line? Moreover, how does slowing down a physician advance patient care?

It may be that in another business, there are so many spare PCs available they can be used as tethered remote terminals for a wireless access via an iPad… but unless the IT department demonstrates more fiscal irresponsibility than common sense, I doubt the Apple fanboy fantasy will fly.

[I really dont see the point. its like buying an iMac and putting windows xp on it…why dont you just get a windows system to begin with? Asus has had a tablet running xp and 7 for months now and its the same price as an iPad…again i dont see the point

One practical reason for doing this (whether you have a iPad or a Asus tablet) is that you’re using the fast internet connection available at home or in the office. All you’re sending over the WiFi or 3G link to the tablet is the screen refreshing. I notice much better throughput with the iPad when controlling my PC at home vs. accessing the web directly with the iPad/Safari when it’s connected via 3G.

iSSH for the iPad is another App to consider.

iNet WOL is also a good addition if your desktop supports “wake on lan”

I would not wish my personal experience with LogMeIn on my worst enemy.

I installed the program on two computers standing next to one another and then tried it. I registered and when I tried to access the one computer from the other I got a message that there were signs that I had used the account for illegal activity and I was immediately shut down. The call desk was incredibly rude to me, so I sent an e-mail to the help desk. The help desk demanded proof that I had not used the account illegally. My response that I had never even used it before it was flagged as illegal only resulted in an abusive response that I hope never to see from a legitimate company.

Even though this happened several months ago I am still incredibly angry at the shabby way I was treated by this organization, and I hope never to see any further mention of its products and services.
