A friend gets the follow error message when starting her computer
run-time error ’62’:
input past end of file
She can then hit a key and the computer goes on to start just fine. This does not happen on a RESTART – just a cold boot.
Any ideas?

Where in the cold boot does it happen? Is it before the Windows Splash screen, etc…
Just a thought… there could be an ‘END’ statement in one of the system files, such as Autoexec.bat and/or config.sys… check these out… even a line that appears to be blank could have a “space” character in it…
One way to find out where it is occuring is to have the person boot-up with line-by-line confiramtion — and then see what line is causing the error.
There are a couple of way do this. If it is Win9x, I think that can be done by opening a run box and typing “msconfig” (no quotes) and Enter. In the resulting “System Configuration Utility”, select the “Diagnostic startup – interactively load device drivers and software”. Then reboot. I think this runs you through the bootup process asking you Yes or No to each step. If you, I *think* you can trigger the same thing by holding F8 during a reboot and selecting the appropriate choice when offered.
Once the “bad” command is run, the message should appear. If it MUST be done on a cold reboot, then obviously do it then.
