After a test installation of the most recent update of one of our long established software products I noticed that the required option to “Run as administrator”, among other things, had disappeared from some of the desktop shortcuts.

The “Properties” of the shortcut seem to also have been corrupted with what should be occupying the “Target” field now in the “Start In” field. The “Target” field contains some text that seems related to the folder in which the executable is stored or the shotcut label.

The effect seems to appear with shortcuts for both new installations and software that has been on the computer for years.

Since it has been several months since the last test installation, likely since the beginning of 2018, there may have been several intervening Win 10 “upgrades”. Therefore I cannot pinpoint which one, if any, might be responsible. I first noticed the problem with 1803, but when I rolled back to 1709 there was no improvement.

Any ideas what the problem might be and how to fix it?

I just checled my 1709, which is patched through the Patch Tuesday CU. Run as Administrator is in all of the context menus. Perhaps it is something inherited from 1803 and not removed in the rollback?

Many thanks. I never thought of that as a possibility.

I wonder if anyone else has encountered the problem in any version. It’s easy to miss if you don’t need the feature. More data points would be greatly appreciated.

I’m on the latest build and I’m not seeing issues with “Run as Administrator.”

It’s there for Desktop shortcuts, and it’s under the “More” submenu when you right-click on individual items on the Start menu.

Thanks.  I hadn’t previously systematically checked the Start menu. It appears that while less than half the desktop shortcuts are affected, some but not all, of those that are affected also lack the “Run as admin” under “More” in the Start menu. I can’t see any pattern yet.
