I’ve stared at this until I’m ‘Microsoft Blue’ in the face. I must be missing something.

What I want is for my ‘Sent Items’ to go somewhere other than my ‘Sent Items Folder’. The reason is that our over-ambitious administrators want to limit my mailbox size unreasonably. I can have the sent messages copied elsewhere without trouble, using a rule, and I can tell Outlook not to save a copy in ‘Sent Items’ from the options, but I can’t find a way to mark the copied messages read, as they normally do in the ‘Sent Items’.

A little searching has led me to the fact that it seems you can only mark inward messages read with rules.

Have I done this the wrong way? Is there a trick?

I could solve this if I could easily tell the rule to mark all messages in my custom ‘sent’ folder as read, or indeed just the one I just put there. Any ideas? I’m also happy to use some VBA if anyone knows where I should start.

As always, all suggestions gratefully received. No such thing as a stupid idea.

    Cheers Jim

I don’t think so. I use a lot of rules aimed to sort mail into various folders when I send them to specific people. They all end up marked as unread. OTOH, if I use the Options alternative and select a different file for the individual letter [i.e., not Sent,] then it is marked as read.

All this is prefaced by a large I Think, as I haven’t run careful tests.

      Best, Michael

You might try tinkering with this code at the Slipstick site. For example, you would want reset the default to your custom Sent Items folder. You may have already seen the Move rather than Copy on Send thread that the link comes from. HTH
