Has anyone updated a Windows 10 computer to Windows 11 using Rufus?

If so, how did the update go?

I updated an incompatible, but 64-bit Windows 10 (originally Windows 7, I think it has TPM 1.0) computer to Windows 11 using the Rufus method a few months ago, the monthly security updates since then installed with no problem.ย  I started with version 22H2 of Windows 11 Pro and then used setup from another Rufus made USB (from within Windows) to upgrade it to 23H2.ย  I don’t know if the enablement package would have worked or been offered automatically I guess I didn’t wait long enough to see.ย  No problems at all except that my Windows Vista scanner driver for Canon LIDE that I had kludged into Windows 10 disappeared.

As for general adjusting to change, because there is a widget thing is in the lower left where the start menu I was used to, for a bit I kept hovering it by accident until I decided I don’t really want weather / news / whatever so I just turned off the widget.ย  All is going super smooth.ย  The icon instead of words for cut and paste and rename in right click menu seemed a bit unfamiliar at first but I am almost used to it by now.

I am very tempted to recommend to my less technical friends to do it even on unsupported hardware, as long as they are willing to buy an SSD and either have or can have 8gb of ram, but I know better and I won’t tell them to try it until after the death date in 2025, and only if they come to me first worried about security.ย  I might still recommend a quick easy (paid) fix solution like 0patch for them since I don’t want to be responsible if they don’t like the IMO tiny changes in Windows 11.ย ย  For me, though it was a piece of cake.ย  Time to buy a new scanner I guess.ย  I hope the upgrade goes well on my other computers when I feel it is time.

      The Rufus method?
I thought Rufus was just an ISO burner – you download the W11 ISO and burn it to a USB stick.

The new builds of Rufus let you create local account vs mandatory Microsoft account when installing Windows 11.
The app also let you bypass Microsoftโ€™s hardware blocks installing Widows 11.

Do you have firsthand experience using Rufus to install Windows 11 on a PC that according to Microsoft can’t run Windows 11?

If so, how did it work out for you?

    • #2618214

If you use the newer version of Rufus to create a bootable installation USB, the final step presents the following popup allowing you to select special installation variables that bypass most of Microsoft’s requirements for installing Windows 11.

      RufusWindows11-options

It also presents a “similar” but smaller set of options when used to create a Windows 10 installation USB.

It’s one thing to install Win11 on a computer that does not meet MS requirements for home use. It’s another thing if you are considering that for your Business computers. You do not know when MS is going to block unqualified computers (MS stopped signing the Intel driver for my Win8.1 computer running on their blocked 7th gen CPU). Or when business standards are going to refuse to accept those computers (my tax software will not run on my up-to-date Win8.1 this year).

IMHO For Business purposes, I would recommend following recommended standards.

MSFT may also revoke the digital licence for the W10 image restoration, rendering the PC useful for a Linux Distro :))

No but poster ableinc earlier in this thread indicated they used it for that and, if I recall correctly, there are other AskWoody posters who’ve also indicated they used it to install Windows 11 on PC’s that did not meet Microsoft’s requirements.

As for me, I’ll be staying on Windows 10 until the bitter end because…

1- As of now, I see absolutely nothing about Windows 11 that would entice me to use it.

2- I do not like the changes (i.e. removal of features I “regularly” use) that Microsoft made to Windows 11.

            me too, noads.
I’ll stay with Windows 10 as well, even if I have to use an LTSC version of Win10 on my old PCs that don’t meet the official hardware requirements for Win11

This works to get by the “Your hardware does not meet specs to install Windows 11”. I have applied this to my older home pc, and it worked perfectly. I have been receiving the monthly Windows 11 updates without issue. I don’t think I would apply this to business systems.

Navigate toย HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup. Create a newย Keyย with the nameย LabConfig. After that, add the following fiveย DWORD (32-bit) Valuesย with value dataย 1.

          1. BypassCPUCheck
          2. BypassRAMCheck
          3. BypassSecureBootCheck
          4. BypassStorageCheck
          5. BypassTPMCheck

this reg hacks only work for something around 3rd/4th gen intel based uefi systems with TPM 1.2, Steve. they won’t work for something older than those & won’t work for non-uefi (or legacy bios based) systems

We are considering using Rufus to update two Windows 10 laptops to Windows 11.

The computers are only used occasionally and only while traveling.

When we run the PC Health Check on the machines, we find that:

      • The Intel Core i5-63000U CPUsย  2.40GHz arenโ€™t currently supported,
      • Both PCs support Secure Boot,
      • TPM 2.0 is enabled on both machines, and
      • There are at least 4 GB of system memory in each system.

We find Microsoft’s use of the wording, “arenโ€™t currently supported ….” interesting.ย  Is Microsoft leaving the door open to supporting the CPUs in the future?

So what problems are we likely to run into if we install Windows 11 using Rufus?

Similar to what I ran into when I installed Win8.1 on a computer with a 7th gen Intel CUP.

      No way.

So what problems are we likely to run into if we install Windows 11 using Rufus?

So far, none. Microsoft may in the future stop updating / disable these Windows PCs.

      • #2619926

Microsoft is highly unlikely to disable a PC. They may stop updates but the backlash from disabling PCs would be monumental even for them.

Microsoft starts shaming unsupported Windows 11 PCs, but offers a way to deal with it

Microsoft has started shaming unsupported or ineligible Windows 11 computers with a desktop watermark that says โ€œSystem requirements not metโ€. The watermark has been around for a while, but itโ€™s only started rolling out to devices in production. Thankfully, you can disable these watermarks, according to Microsoft.

Microsoft has no plans to block Windows 11 updates on unsupported PCs. Still, the company wants to shame those installations by putting the watermark on the desktop and inside the Windows Settings app..

It is good news that, โ€œMicrosoft has no plans to block Windows 11 updates on unsupported PCs.โ€

Now the question is when to download Rufus and make the transition from Windows 10 to 11.

Don’t build on it. That may change any day.

We have 18 months to sort that out. I’m not rushing, probably revisit it with 6 months to go.ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

My inclination is to download Rufus now and put it away for safe keeping.

Then begin the migration of our computers from Windows 10 to 11 sometime after New Years 2025.

Rufus will be updated numerous times until 2025 and so will Windows 11
