I don’t wish to be an alarmist, but the Spyware Weekly Newsletter’s lead article today was about how new Sony audio CDs install rootkits onto your computer as part of a copy deterrent. You can read the issue, in it’s entirety, here Spyware Weekly, Nov 4, 2005 .

Thanks, Hans, for linking to that previous post. Sorry for posting news that had been previously covered. I’d seen it, but couldn’t remember if it was here, or on GRC’s Spyware forum. Regardless, rootkit installation via copy protection software will become, in all probability, more prevalent in the near future, and is quite disturbing, although I suppose that it shouldn’t surprise any of us when large companies employ such tactics.
