Susan Bradley mentioned, in a post ( https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/ms-defcon-2-kicking-off-the-new-year/#post-2732944 ), that she had recently acquired a Richo ScanSnap iX1600 document scanner.

Based upon her recommendation, we acquired an iX1600 and are in the process of learning how to use it.

Overall, the ScanSnap iX1600 document scanner is going to take some getting used to.

The ScanSnap ships with its own software – ScanSnap Home as well as Kofax Power PDF.

However, I am set in my ways and wanted to continue using Adobe Acrobat Standard 2020 with the new scanner.

After an extensive internet search, I found a YouTube video with step-by-step instructions on how to incorporate Adobe Acrobat 2020 into the ScanSnap Home software (  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-K1MgqmkESo  ).

We had been using a Canon MX870 printer/scanner/fax attached to a Windows 10 Pro Workstation.  We replaced the old workstation with a new PC only to find out that the MX870 was not compatible with Windows 11 Pro thus the need for a new scanner.

Our instincts were to acquire a Brother MFC-L2820DW but were hesitant based upon our prior experience with HP’s requirement to use only HP printer supplies thus are decision to go with the Richo stand alone scanner.

Our first impression of the ScanSnap iX1600 is lukewarm due to:

    • The limited documentation that shipped with the machine,
    • An inability to find a manual that we could download from the Richo site,
    • Complexity of sorting through the scanner’s documentation on the Richo site, and
    • The small form factor of the iX1600 vs the boat anchor that it is replacing.

Now, after fiddling around with the new scanner for nearly a week we are ready to put it through its paces.

I love the fact that it has the automatic “filing” software, that I can edit the buttons on the home screen to have ‘scan straight to specific folder based on what I’m doing/scanning’ and the fact that it doesn’t take up a huge amount of desktop space.

While you can use Adobe software to scan to pdf, I like the fact that it will autoname the file based on the scan.

Nothing sold these days ships with documentation.

      See if that helps?

        Susan

On first look the Richo ScanSnap iX1600 is an amazing document scanner.

However, over the years we have developed a scanned record filing system that has more than 130 directories and a substantially greater number of subdirectories.

We have also developed a standardized document labeling format that starts with the date the document was created (25-01-17) and then a standardized document name based upon the specific document being saved.  We have been using this system for more than 25 years and have tens of thousands of files saved using the format.

So, our scanner filing preference is to scan the document, click on save, move through the hierarchy of directories to the directory we are looking for, open it, click on a preceding document (such as 24-12-23 xyz.pdf), update the file date (25-01-17 xyz.pdf), and save the document.

It will take time to teach ScanSnap Home how find the correct directory and label the newly scanned document so that it is compatible with our filing system.

I will have to figure out how to use the edit the buttons on the home screen to so that I can “‘scan straight to specific folder based on what I’m doing/scanning’.”

Just spent an hour scanning a backlog of documents with the following results:

        • Most scanned well. In fact, I was amazed that duplex scans passed through the scanner once – not twice;
        • Paper moved through the scanner like summer lightning;
        • Each of the documents that was printed on lightweight paper jammed and had to be removed from the scanner, smoothed out, and rescanned; and
        • A significant number of multi-page documents moved through the scanner in one pass and had to re scanned.

Yes, the ScanSnap iX1600 is a Tiny Dancer.  Now I have to figure out how to reconfigure my work area to take advantage of the new found space.  Another unexpected time-consuming repercussion of our migration to Windows 11 Pro 24H2.

          …the Richo ScanSnap iX1600…

Uh, Kathy, I believe that the actual brand name is Ricoh (emphasis added), pronounced “reeco” for those curious about it.  😉

You are correct it is a Ricoh ScanSnap iX1600 Document Scanner not Richo.

            Sorry for the sticky fingers.

Follow the video,  You set up profiles to go to certain folders.   You can also edit the taxonomy of the file names as I recall.

Since starting this thread, I have spent additional time setting up our new Richo ScanSnap iX1600 document scanner.

      Bottom line, it’s phenomenal.

While I am frustrated by the need to use the iX1600’s ScanSnap Home software for scanning, we have successfully incorporated Adobe Acrobat Standard 2020 into ScanSnap.

The scanner package also included a Kofax Power PDF license. Kofax duplicates the capabilities of Adobe Acrobat and we are unlikely to use it in the near future.

The Richo ScanSnap iX1600 is a phenomenal piece of hardware. When teamed with a new HP C2 Tower G9 workstation with an Intel Core i7 microprocessor, 32 GB of system memory, Nvidia T400 video card, running under Windows 11 Pro 64 – bit version 24H2 the thing scans like summer lightning.

The scanned documents open in Adobe Acrobat and have already gone through the optical character recognition process.  All done faster than a blink of an eye.

An absolutely amazing document scanner and well worth the time, effort, and money spent on the hardware

Just had another pleasant surprise related to our new Ricoh ScanSnap iX1600 Document Scanner.

It is tax season and we have been trying transfer the data from our monthly downloaded PDF credit card statements to Excel spreadsheets.

I have been using Adobe Acrobat Standard 2020 and its predecessors for years and was trying to use it to export the documents into Microsoft Excel Workbooks and then block and copy the individual monthly transactions and then past them into “clean” Excel spreadsheets.

The problem we encountered was the failure of Acrobat to correctly format the exported data and thus an inability to easily transfer the exported data into a usable Excel Workbook.

After hours of fighting with Adobe, I opened one of the monthly credit card statements using the Kofax Power PDF app that was included in the Ricoh ScanSnap iX1600 Document Scanner package.

      It worked. Using Kofax I:

      • Opened a monthly statement,
      • Clicked on the Convert PDF to Excel Spreadsheet on the Quick Access Toolbar,
      • Clicked OK,
      • Kofax asked where I wanted to save the file and I answered,
      • Then the app undertook the conversion, and
      • Unlike Adobe Acrobat, Kofax created a clean/usable Excel worksheet.

Thank you Susan Bradley for recommending Richo ScanSnap iX1600 document scanner.

Not only is it an excellent scanner – the software that shipped (downloaded) with the hardware is outstanding.
