Revo Uninstaller question

Not sure if this is the right forum but here goes.

I had installed Waterfox but decided (for good reason or bad) I didn’t want it. However, it didn’t appear in the Revo uninstaller window, so I wondered how I could get rid of it. But I then thought of looking in Control panel/programs and features and there it was, so I uninstalled it successfully, and left FF working as normal. But I had noticed that the programs and features had more entries than Revo. Why is this? What is it about some programs (sorry apps) that they don’t appear in Revo, for instance WinPatrol doesn’t?

I have Win 8.1 Pro.

If its the portable version of Revo, it must be run as administrator, don’t know about the installed version. Was it installed using this method. ?

Thanks for that, but I uninstalled it, downloaded the latest version (which I already had) and unblocked as suggested. But the ‘missing’ items are still ‘missing’. I would have thought it would not work at all rather than mainly work ….

Revo Uninstaller free only sees 32 Bit apps. Waterfox is a 64 Bit browser similar to FF. To see and thus uninstall 64 Bit apps you would need the pro version. I suspect the app you are uninstalling is a 64 Bit app.

I would suggest CP, Programs and Features. See if the app is listed there. Uninstall it, then use CCleaner to clean up left overs in the app and registry. Be careful with the registry and only choose those entries that are part of the uninstalled app.

Thanks Ted, that explains it. I did actually use CP/programs and features to uninstall it. As it uses FF’s info so best not to delete any more. I will investigate Revo U Pro to see if I need it. And CCleaner!

I use Revo Pro and highly recommend it. I especially like the monitored install feature which makes uninstalls go much faster and are more complete. If you do a lot of testing of programs like I do it is a life saver well worth the money IMHO. If you sign up for the Bits du jour newsletter they often have a good deal on Revo Pro as well as other software often recommended here like Macrium Reflect Pro, etc. HTH :cheers:

Like Revo, Geekuninstaller works without needing to be installed before a program to monitor it, which for the average user is what they are looking for as many users will only reach for an uninstaller with extra features to the Windows built in add/ remove option when they have a stubborn/ broken program they are already having trouble removing.

Geekuninstaller is very lightweight as it doesn’t install another program on your system it downloads as a zip file, just extract the files, once extracted just run the EXE, but it’s not light on features. Like the Windows built in add/ remove option Geekuninstaller has a basic remove / modify option and for them stubborn programs it has force removal feature Revo free does not have this option.

If you have a lot of programs installed there is a search bar built in to Geekuninstaller to search through your installed programs for the one you want to un-install.

The features that really impressed me is the ability to select a program and view the registry entry for it. The user can also select a program and and access it’s homepage directly from Geekuninstaller. In case you are unsure of a program name that’s listed as installed on your system you can select the query program and do a Google search directly from Geekuninstaller. If you need a list of all your installed programs Geekuninstaller can export a list of them all with details of the program name, size and date installed to a HTML file saved on your PC.

When uninstalling using Geekuninstaller Geek runs the programs you wish to uninstall built-in uninstaller ( unless you choose force removal option ) and then Geek scans for leftover files and registry items so the user can get more of a cleaner uninstall than just using the Windows built-in option. In my experience of testing both Revo and Geek Revo seemed to scan and find more registry items but that was when I was scanning using the moderate and advanced mode in Revo rather than the safe-mode which is the mode recommended to the average user and the mode I usually use, as we all know deleting registry items willy nilly is not a good idea. When using Revo safe-mode Revo and Geek preformed about the same in finding and deleting leftovers, Geek only has one scan mode.

Although Revo will work on a 64bit system the free version doesn’t fully support 64bit, whereas Geekuninstaller supports and works on both 32 and 64bit and when running on 64bit Windows system GeekUninstaller is runs as a native 64bit application. One last point to mention Geekuninstaller doesn’t automatically create a system restore point before uninstalling a program so it may be an idea for the user to remember to do that themselves when they intend to uninstall a program see here on how to create a system restore point.

I will give Geekuninstaller a try, however, I now use IOBituninstaller. It works with 64 bit apps and is free as well. To me, it works as well as Revo did. I switched when I went to 64 bit Win7 and Revo didn’t work with 64 bit apps. IOBituninstaller is no longer portable, so that may be a ding against it. It was portable when I first started using it.

Run REVO in Hunter Mode, a Green Hunter Mode Icon will replace the REVO browser, a Green Icon will appear top right of your screen.
Drag the program you want to uninstall icon onto the Hunter Mode Icon
or
If the program you want to remove hasn’t placed an icon on your desktop, locate its exe.file in program files then drag that onto REVO Hunter Mode Icon
or
If the program runs, drag its toolbar onto the Hunter Mode Icon

When I read the “Revo Uninstaller Question”, I thought it might be concerning the incident I had awhile back. I’ve used Revo Free for several years without a hitch. This time, I needed to uninstall an Apple Updater. When it got to deleting registry entries I noticed some of the items in bold were for other updater programs. Whoa! After un-checking these items and finishing the job, I wrote to Revo, asking why this happened. The response was that I should buy the Pro version so it wouldn’t do that. Hmmmm. So in other words, “you can’t trust our free version anymore?”

Buying software is a lot like buying a new car. The more you’re willing to pay, the more bells and whistles you’re going to get.
If you just get the base model (software or car) you won’t get the Leather/Heated seats, the GPS, 15 speaker, 300 watt stereo system,
or the auto parking feature.

If a FREE piece of software had all the extras, there would be no reason for anyone to ever BUY the software. Think about it!
You’d most likely do the same thing, if you were in the software business.

This year alone, I’ve actually BOUGHT several titles of Pro Software, just so I get all the ‘Goodies’. I hate buying software, when there is so much good FREE stuff available. But, sometimes it’s necessary.

I do have the PRO version of Revo Uninstaller and it’s GREAT!

Yes, that’s exactly what I was thinking about the reply. I’ve dug up the final response from Revo, after their “investigation” –
“Hello again,
After a lot of tests we have come to the conclusion that the reason it lists those Foxit and Creative keys and files is that it actually finds the keyword “Updater” from “Apple Updater”. Please try using Moderate or even Safe mode. Such a mistake should not occur on the Pro version however.

Thanks, rje49, for the clarification. Their actual wording sounds a little more reasonable, though I still wonder why the Pro version shouldn’t have this problem.
I do have one question: what degree of thoroughness did you choose? I have the Pro version, and I always choose Moderate, or occasionally even Safe, if I think there’s a likelihood of some confusion. I never choose the most “thorough” and in fact I think even Revo has in the past tended to discourage its use except among the most knowledgeable users.

I’ve always used the Advanced setting and also never had a problem before this. I continue to use it that way but I take a more careful look at what is in bold- as they instruct.
One more thing – as I said, that quote from Revo was their final “analysis”. In the previous email, they wanted to know which version I was using, and if it wasn’t the Pro version to go here(link) and downloaded it. The whole episode is past but not quite forgotten; it simply sounds like there was a problem with their program but instead of saying “thanks for pointing it out, we’ll see about fixing it”, they just wanted to sell me the pro version. I wouldn’t have bet on it working any differently at the time.

DrWho, I agree with much of what you said about getting more bells and whistles when you pay more, but I don’t think that really addresses rje49’s issue. He/she wasn’t talking about getting fewer bells and whistles but rather getting a program that didn’t work well. Using your car analogy, it would be like buying a no-frills new car and finding that the steering mechanism is defective. Normally, one doesn’t have to buy a more expensive model to have the car function properly. If in fact Revo no longer cares about the accuracy of its free version and is using it primarily in a bait-and-switch scam, even many of us who own and like the PRO version may decide we no longer want to trust such an unethical company. Frankly, though, I have a hard time believing that Revo responded the way rje49 says. It makes no sense for a company as well known and highly respected as Revo to respond so irresponsibly. My guess/hope is that there was a misunderstanding somewhere along the way.

I have always used the Advanced setting, and NEVER regretted it. Even with the Advanced setting, usually CCleaner finds one or two more leftovers after Revo finishes.
