• Revo Uninstaller not backing up registry keys

Yesterday I installed the free version of Revo Uninstaller and uninstalled a small program to test it out.

After uninstalling the program using the moderate setting and doing one “remove entry” command (which was really just removing the uninstall registry key for that program), I looked in the program folder for the backed-up registry key that should have appeared there. But it’s not there. I also had chosen the option to send the removed folders to the recycle bin, but one I checked there, the folders had not been sent there.

I contacted their support, who were nice enough to try to duplicate the problem, with the same program that I uninstalled, on a 32-bit XP SP3 Home machine. They couldn’t duplicate the problem.

Can anyone tell me what might be going on and how I might be able to get it to work? I really like the idea of automatically backing up registry keys.

    Thanks,
    Ellen

You could manually save a copy of the registry yourself, before doing the uninstall — Run regedit, then choose File / Export.

Thanks, I know, but I would really like to get it to work correctly.

I use the Revo Uninstaller Pro version. My options include backing up registry entries to the recycle bin. I always use the Advanced Mode to find left over items. Unless you changed the back up location of these removed items, they might be in your recycle bin as well.

No, nothing from that uninstall showed up in the recycling bin. I just rechecked.

Did you set “make a system Restore point and a full registry backup” in Tools > options> uninstaller?
Did you check to see if you have a System restore point prior to the deletion?

The option I have checked says, “make a system restore point before uninstalling.” But I am not really interested in a system restore point, as I have a full image backup. I just want the program to do what it is supposed to do, and that is to back up the registry entry that was deleted.

That option may not be available in the free version of Revo.

The manual shows that it is available. And, if it weren’t available, the support guys would have told me.

As stated earlier, in my installation, Revo does indeed backup all registry entries it deletes, to the recycle bin. Perhaps your installation did not succeed properly. It might be worth an uninstall/reinstall of Revo Uninstall.

Medico, don;t you have the Pro version? decbelle is using the free version.

The only manual I can find on the Revo site is for the pro version. Support people don’t always give out the right information especially if they didn’t realize you were using the free version.

Yes, I have the Pro version. That is kind of what I was trying to get across, that perhaps the difference was between the Pro and Free versions. My wife has the free version of Revo on her PC.

There are considerably less options on the free version. I see an option to put deleted files and folders in the recycle bin, and an option to create a backup to the registry before deleting anything, but not a special option to save deleted registry items in particular

What’s listed under Uninstaller options in the free version Ted? I remember only an option to create a Restore point.

      33026-RevoOptionsFree2

It allows leftover files and folders to be deleted to the Recycle bin, but not specifically Registry entries as the Pro version has.

But here’s the thing, it wasn’t even doing that. Even though I have that option checked, the folders it removed were not in the recycle bin. So something is screwy here.

          Your problem is clearly unusual.
I have used Revo for a couple of years & Have been very satisfied.
Occasionally I am surprised, for example recently it failed to list an installed program that was listed in the Win7 control panel list of installed programs! That is unusual & I advised Revo the details.

I think you have a few options:
          1) Accept for you it’s not working as expected, & as you want it to; but use anyway for ease/convenience.
          2) Find another free uninstaller product that performs better with respect to your needs.
          3) Persist with the Tech support at Revo – keep at them politely & ask how you can help, be prepared to do a bit of work to trial install/uninstall, check your winXP system or even consider upgrade of OS to Win7 – it really is better than XP.

i can run revo first and then comodo programs manager and find leftover registry entries quite often. revo looks for entries by using built-in algorithms
(it doesn’t monitor the actual install in the free version, iirc) the pro version that i upgraded to will monitor if told to, but the result isn’t much better. the free revo is better than most other free uninstallers (imo) but doesn’t touch the 64bit part of the registry, which is why i upgraaded. i had the free version not back up the registry once in a while but it always sent deletions to the r/bin. you might check to see if all recycle bins are set to be handled by “c” drive recycle bin, provided you have multiple partitions. i also use a little app to reg shot before and after an install so i can see what has changed. even paid apps have a major design flaw that can cause a failure any time…
            (they are) made by man.

That is why I suggested an uninstall/reinstall. The screen shots above are exactly the way my wife’s free Revo Uninstaller is set up, and it does do what it advertises.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I did uninstall and reinstall it. Still having the same problem.

      decibelle …

Download the free program ERUNT, available in both installer and portable versions. It automatically makes a backup of your complete registry on the initial system boot each day, and you can run it manually (easy and quick) at any time. As I said, it backs up your complete registry, something that regedit/export doesn’t do. Restoring a backed-up registry is equally easy and quick.
