Some time ago there was an effective workaround for the non-persistent setting that Firefox used when opening the sidebar.  The developers marked the bug as fixed in FF 138 but when FF updated the bug was back.  Once again, after starting FF and then opening the sidebar it always opens to bookmarks instead of the the view (history) that I prefer.

    So annoying!

You don’t mention exactly how you are opening the sidebar, but I’m using FF 138 and “Ctrl+h” or the “open history” button on the left is working fine.

I use the Sidebar button on the toolbar rather than the main menu or the keyboard.

The point is that the preference for displaying history or bookmarks in the sidebar is no longer persistent between starts of Firefox. It doesn’t matter how the sidebar is opened. Open the sidebar and set it to display history close the sidebar and exit Firefox. Start Firefox and open the sidebar. It should display history but it doesn’t.

You can check Firefox History Settings.

To ensure Firefox retains and accumulates browsing history:

Type ” about:preferences#privacy ” in the address bar and press Enter.

Under the “History” section, select “Use custom settings for history.”

Ensure “Always use private browsing mode” is unchecked.

Turn on “Remember browsing and download history.”

Click the “Settings” button next to “History” and turn on “Cache and Form & Search
      history.”

Click “OK” to save your settings.

Actually, I thought your post was clear. Did you walk through all the septs I outlined?

      Screenshot may help:

If it doesn’t help, then I must be missing something.  Wouldn’t be the first time.

@TechTango My settings do save history, etc. Following shows exactly how the sidebar button setting is no longer persistent between sessions in FF 138.

@TechTango Maybe I wasn’t clearly explaining the issue.  When I say that it doesn’t display history what I mean is that clicking the sidebar button on the toolbar always brings up the sidebar displaying bookmarks instead of history.  The choice to display history in the sidebar when it is opened by the toolbar button does not persist between firefox sessions.
