• Restoring My Backup

    Hi,

I just had my laptop repaired and it came back with a clean Windows 10 installation and program links, but all of my programs and data are missing.

I have a True Image 2020 backup of my Windows partition that I made before sending the laptop in for repair. Is there a way I can do a restore without interfering with the current Windows installation? If I restore everything but the Windows directory, would that do what I want?

Or would it be better to just restore the entire backup with my 6-week-old OS?

    Thanks!

That is the proper way to restore as it seems you haven’t separated OS (on drive C) from data (on drive D) in your original setup.

Thanks for the reply. I wasn’t clear — sorry. I do have the OS and data on separate partitions. However, all the programs are on the OS partition and some of them store their data on that partition.

My important data is fine. I mostly just need to get my programs back, with their setting and data that they have stored on the OS partition.

There is no way to restore installed apps, data, registry entries, system folders.. without restoring the whole OS partition.

        I agree.

Restoring Windows will return the machine to its original settings, but it may revert to being broken, depending on what was wrong.

I would make an image of the current Windows before doing the restore, just in case.

Boot from the Acronis recovery USB to restore – it doesn’t work well from within Windows.

      cheers, Paul

        Thanks for the help, Paul.

In True Image 2020, I don’t see anything that says recovery. I have Rescue Media Builder and Acronis Universal Restore.

I assume Acronis Media Builder in the documentation is the same as Rescue Media Builder. Is this what I should use?

Do you recommend a USB drive over a DVD?

I saw an Acronis mention somewhere yesterday of being able to boot directly from my backup drive. Is that a possibility?

        Thanks,

        Warren

Sorry to sound like such an idiot; I’m feeling stressed trying to get this done. I used to have a lot better understanding of this, but I’ve been out of the field for too long.

For me usb is better than dvd for times when imaging a system with no dvd drive.  Acronis boot disk are very simply laid out you won’t click the wrong thing.  Idk how to make the boot media from the installed program but if it gives an option I would use usb.

      Yes, that’s the one.

You can make your backup drive bootable, but you need to do it before you backup – you can get around it but it’s your backup and you don’t want to play with it.

I use USB for boot because it’s easy to make / change, but if you only have a DVD big enough…

      cheers, Paul
