I have a Gateway G6-300 with a 4 G hard disk. I was getting messages that my resources were low so I purchased more memory. I know have 208 meg of memory and 1G free on the disk. I am still running low on resources after opening and closing programs. I have a few things open on my systray but even without them my resources start out at 80% after rebooting. I keep Outlook 98 open all the time. How can I get my %resources higher. It seems that buying a new computer with more speed would do nothing for the resources. Is is WIN95?

Starting off with 80% resources is not particularly unusual, particularly with Windows 95. The resources low problem usually is related to the memory area below 640k which is required by old 16 bit programs. From your description, it sounds like you are running some old 16 bit programs (16 bit games are particularly bad) and that some of these programs may have “memory leaks” that are using up the memory below 640k and not freeing it up when they are finished. Buying more physical memory will not help this problem. If those programs will run on Windows 98 or ME, then upgrading will help some since more of the OS internal code has been converted to 32 bit and moved out of the below 640k area.

All the programs I am currently running are 32 bit (Outlook 98, MS Office 97, Quicken 2000, QuickBooks 2001). I am told that some programs are not well written and do not completely exit from memory when closed. Could this be the problem with the Intuit programs?

I do not know of any problems like you describe with Outlook, or MS Office. I use quicken 2000 on Windows 2000 and have not had any problems. I don’t know about Quickbooks.

We have seen a problem like this with Outlook if you use Word as the editor. Seems it can leave multiple instances of Word open, looking at Task Manager. In Outlook, go to Tools, Options, Mail Format, and ensure that Word is not your editor.

Do a ‘Ctrl-Alt-Del’ and provide the list of items that are running in ‘Task Manager’. This will tell us what is REALY running.

I did a CTL ALT DEL after a boot and systematically removed one item at a time. Each one added perhaps 1-3% more resources. When I first boot up I am already down to 73%, after opening Outlook it drops to 63% and then its all downhill after opening and closing other software. I don’t leave anything open except for Outlook. I finally have to reboot Windows to clean out the memory. Is this all just what comes with WIN95?

I’ve seen this problem with Win95 and Excel in Office97. I eventually made it go away by upgrading to Win98, the boss was paying so no pain. This user is a heavy user of Outlook and Access so the upgrade was easy to justify.

Well, finally the answer! Thank you very much for taking the time to point me in the right direction. Seems to me that what I need to do is to upgrade my OS….the question is which one? 2000, ME, 98?
