Hi,
I have this HP notebook. On it I had Win 7 Pro installed on an SSD. All legal from the restore partition of HP. It broke down a week ago. Was able to recover the data but the SSD will not start anymore, can only read and even copy the partitions. Tried several options to start windows or do another restore but all no luck. The notebook reports no OS found.
Thought might as well install the preview of 10 with the ISO file on this SSD. But I read that 10 can only be installed on a working copy of 7 or 8.
Does anyone have a solution for this? I do have the license number of the original Win 7 Pro.
TIA
Sjors

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

AskWoody LoungerJuly 14, 2015 at 11:51 am #1515101Do you have a Win 7 Repair or Install disk that you could try booting up with ?
What you got from the restore partition will be OEM and I assume the product key will be from the COA Sticker ?
Anyway, with either type of disk (install disk probably better), you can navigate to the Recovery Environment and select Command Prompt.
If the SSD is dead then the next command probably won’t return anything, but enter bcdedit |find “osdevice” and see if that gives you a partition letter.
Win 7 is supposed to have Trim to look after SSDs but it isn’t always active.
If it gives you a partition letter then enter chkdsk x: where x is the partition letter, but if the SSD is quiet in a normal boot, then it probably is dead.
The chkdsk will complete and give its report.

AskWoody PlusJuly 15, 2015 at 5:42 am #1515189Hi, tried Sudo15’s solutions, didn’t work on this harddisk. Also reinstalling from scratch gave errors related to the SSD. Copied an image from another notebook and that gave life to the SSD. Now I was able to install Win7 from scratch. Phew, took me two weeks. Tnx guys (?) for thinking with me.

AskWoody PlusJuly 15, 2015 at 11:47 am #1515220tnx for the reminder. Just to clarify things: I just couldn’t get the SSD starting windows. All efforts ended in the message the disk doesn’t have an OS. I could read the data after a recovery though. Also the startup files were there. Couldn’t get it fixed with windows 8.1 possibilities (was an upgrade from the original 7). Couldn’t install a fresh version of 7 or 8 (as you suggested and I already tried). Thought might be the hd-controller so I put in a working hd from another notebook. That started Windows! No bad controller for sure. Had to be the SSD. Cloned/imaged the working hd to the SSD. That started Windows. Put in an original Win 8.1 dvd and this time the fresh setup worked all the way with the original upgrade license for this notebook.
Seems the imaging overcame the problems on the SSD making way for the fresh install.
Wonders still happen luckelyCU
