Where are we at with security vulnerabilities on 1809? I don’t like waiting too long to patch.

      • #1982039

        We are at DEFCON-1.
See the big red “1” at the top of the page.

I installed the October update on 1809 unintentionally.  No problems at all.

That particular patch is already showing as “expired” in WSUS. I wouldn’t bother installing it at this point. It is replaced by the newer October patch if you feel inclined despite the Defcon 1 advisory.

      um woody – KB4512578 for v1809 is a patch from September 2019.
Latest patch for 1809 is currently KB4519338.

On September 30, I installed KB 4512578 on 3 computers. I have not seen any problems.  I am currently on Build 17763.737 (1809).

As to the question about Web Search asked by PKCano, I have Cloud Search in the Settings > Search page set to OFF. I don’t know the relevance to the question.

My 1809 pro runs fine with KB4512578. No start, search… problems.

Is web search turned on or turned off?

Is web search turned on or turned off?

Where is this setting to be found to check its status?

Settings > Search. On the left, Permissions & History. On the right, under Cloud Search, slide Windows Cloud Search on or off.

Over the weekend I downloaded W10 1809 x86 for safe keeping. I decided to clean install on an older spare 60Gb SSD and including the newest October patches I’m bang up-to-date.
No start, search or other issues whatsoever, no event viewer errors before progressing to install Openshell, nuking the crudware, DISM++ tweaks, WPD blocks and firewall settings.

Windows - commercial by definition and now function...

Is web search turned on or turned off?

I don’t see any ‘web search’ in settings. I have ‘Windows cloud search’ on.

      • #1982207

The setting is actually called “Windows Cloud Search.”

It’s relevant because we’ve seen lots of messed up Search (and, I believe Start) behavior in recent cumulative updates when Windows Cloud Search is off.

I’m the guy with the problem.  1809 Pro.  Build 17763.678

My machine is set to delay Feature Updates for 365 days and to delay Quality Updates for 30 days.

When shutting down my computer one day last week I got the “Update and Shutdown” menu.  The next morning when I booted the computer is when everything went sideways.  In addition to the problems I’ve stated, after sitting for a few minutes my computer would eventually become totally unresponsive and the dual monitors would flash on and off in turn.  It took many hours and three Macrium Reflect image restores to narrow down the problem.    This is my work computer.  I need it for productivity.  I am hesitant to monkey around with it now that it’s actually working.

Another guy at work running 1809 Pro started having printing problems at the same time my machine died.  We were able to roll back the print drivers to an older version to fix his problem. His machine is also set to delay updates.  The two computers are by different manufacturers.

      Hi

I have encountered the search breaking on the start menu. I’m using Windows 10 1809 Education. I’m testing using Kerberos authentication via our Web proxy. Other Windows 10 devices in my environment do t have this issue but are using NTLM for authentication. I need to keep everything patched u to build 805. It may be a domain that needs adding to the unauthenticated list which cortana/search/start menu is using. I’ll run a fiddler trace to narrow down the issue.
