      You can try this, from https://community.spiceworks.com/how_to/38624-uninstall-specific-windows-updates-via-cmd-or-batch-file-in-windows-7-8-and-server-2008-2012

      This will run the uninstall without any open windows, and will not prompt for a reboot:

      @echo off
      wusa /uninstall /kb:3161102 /quiet /norestart
      END

      If you are manually running the script on a number of computers that you want to reboot after the uninstall, just change the /norestart switch to /forcestart:

      @echo off
      wusa /uninstall /kb:2744842 /quiet /forcestart
      END

      Today, I took your advice and hid this update.
      Why has there been no problem reports until now?

    • #38298

      System Restore should do the trick. I’ve never installed an update through WU that didn’t create one before installing.

      The easiest way out of this is to uninstall KB3161102 and next uninstall the Tablet PC Components which are not needed by anyone not using a tablet and even so it is likely not to be needed. KB3161102 is never offered if the Tablet PC Components are not installed.

      I don’t know – but it’s optional, uncheck and largely unnoticed.

    • #38301

      I did that years ago, ch100, and yet I somehow still got the update. I think I’ll take Jordan’s or Ed’s advice, and then make sure it’s completely off the hard drive.

      You said not to install optional updates, so I didn’t. Thanks Woody.

      I don’t have the Outlook app so I don’t think that this would affect me. I learned that it deleted the snipping tool, which I sometimes use, so I hid it mainly for that reason (and your advice).

      If a Restore Point was not created with the KB3161102 install, try going back to the next latest point. You will just have to reinstall whatever was installed then.

      I have Tablet PC enabled in the “Windows Features” box in Programs and Features on my desktop machine. I can disable TPC; is there anything more that can or should be done?

    • #38305

      I did exactly what ch100 did and had the exact same results on 2 machines.

      Using the add/remove Windows features seemed to be the better course of action.

      Afterwards I created a dummy Journal file using Notepad and double clicked it and nothing, so it is gone.

      Just tried it like this:
      @echo off
      wusa /uninstall /kb:3161102 /norestart
      :theEnd

      It worked, according to command prompt, which said that the update wasn’t installed on this computer after I ran it twice. WU says I haven’t installed any updates since the 12th of July (the last time I had). But it IS still showing up in updates as having been installed.

      It seems good now.

      If you use the Add/Remove Windows components to remove Tablet Tools, It will remove Journal, at least in Windows 7. I am not familiar with Windows 8.x. Removing it using the Add/Remove Tablet Tools in Win 7 does NOT remove the Snipping Tool under Accessories.

    • #38308

      Another follow-up: removed the update, and now Outlook appears to be working much better.

      I don’t have Tablet Tools.
      I haven’t used Windows Journal, and I only recently learned that I had it. I don’t mind if it sticks around.

      https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3161102
      This link will tell you that you cannot uninstall this update once it is installed.
      I am sure Microsoft would quote security as the reason for this move.

      What happens if after installing KB3161102, Tablet PC Components are uninstalled? Would this action remove KB3161102 as this is an update for Journal, part of Tablet PC Components?

    • #38312

      For what it’s worth, I removed Tablet PC as a Windows Feature in both Win 7 machines, and KB3161102 came off the update list.

    • #38313

      Tablet PC Components are not uninstallable, you can disable them, but they will continue to exist in WinSxS store
      thus, this behavior doesn’t affect KB3161102

    • #38314

      Don’t use win journal. Do use snipping tool. PC has touch screen option though I use a mouse. Should I uninstall or just leave it. Don’t want to lose touch screen option in case decide to use it

    • #38315

      I say leave it. The problem is with JNT files…

    • #38316

      Thank you. Will just let things stand

    • #38317

      I tried in both bat file and CMD, and failed.

      Message pop out that my computer need the update and it can’t be removed.

      Then, I tried to disable PC tablet and restart to try again. The same message pop out again.

      Did you by any chance notice that Windows Search service doesn’t work after installing KB3161102 anymore? Look for errors in System event log mentioning Windows Search.

      As for tablet PC components, what if people have Wacom tablet or some such external device?

    • #38319

      I hadn’t seen the problem with Windows Search.

      No idea what’ll happen with various external devices. I assume it’ll be very device-dependent.
