This option is already enabled.

Toggle the check box. ON to OFF then back to ON.

Check for updates afterwards.

This is an old technique I used many years ago with  other MS OSes.

I also already tried that.  When I toggle off the setting, close the window and go back into it, the setting is automatically toggled back on.

If there aren’t any updates to push you won’t see any. Try updating via Outlook in Office Account and see if it has an update. I doubt you will because office doesn’t update with the same frequency as windows and they are keeping the installation packages current.

The other day on a clean updated Win 10 2004 (19041.239),  I also could not get the Legacy Office 2016 (MSI) to update via Windows Update..

Toggling without leaving “Settings” & “Windows Updates” (using the back arrow), then running Windows Update did the trick for me.

On the very remote chance, check to see if the Legacy Office 2016 was converted over to a C2R package. This conversion has happened in the past.

MSI don’t get “auto” converted to C2R, the user (or IT admin) must do it

anyway, you can check “About” page in any Office app, if it has Update option, then it’s C2R, otherwise MSI

Here are the steps I followed:

1. Right-click Windows start menu and click Settings
2. Click Update & Security
3. Click Advanced options
4. Toggle setting ‘Receive updates for other Microsoft products when you update Windows’ on and off a couple times (waited a few seconds in between each toggle)
5. After toggling the setting on and off a couple times, I left the setting enabled
6. Press the back button (left arrow) to return to Windows Update
7. Click ‘Check for updates’

Windows Update sat for a few minutes checking for updates and started downloading and installing Office 2016 updates (around 20+ updates).  I verified the patches it pulled down are current, as I compared it to the list found on this page:

After Windows Update finished downloading and installing all updates, I restarted the machine, checked for updates again and Windows Update reports ‘You’re up to date’.

I think this issue is resolved for now.  I will continue to monitor as new Office patches are released.  Thank you everyone for your help!!

It seems based on the number of posts regarding ver 2004 that despite Woody’s warnings there are quite a few folks loading it anyway. Waiting….and watching.

This is to confirm the steps I posted yesterday also worked on another machine running Windows 10 version 2004 and Office Pro Plus 2016 (MSI) installation.  I only had to toggle the setting off and then back on, followed by clicking the back button and ‘Check for updates’.

But it’s still considered a bug

it should not be ON by default, and it should response to the user changing ON/OFF simply
not all Office MSI users can foresee that workaround

Win 10 Pro 2004 (sneakily installed itself a few days ago with no apparent problems)

Toggling the setting in Update didn’t work for me either.  What did work:  open Word, go to File / Account.  Mine has an “Office Updates” drop-down box which has an “Update Now” choice.  That worked.  It updated.

There are actually two bugs:

1) When the Windows Update setting ‘Receive updates for other Microsoft products when you update Windows’ is enabled and an instance of Office (MSI installation) is installed, Windows Update doesn’t download/install Office updates.

2) The abovementioned setting cannot be disabled. If you disable the setting and go back to look at the setting, it’s automatically re-enabled.

Users who are not tech-savvy that have this setting enabled will think that when they use Windows Update to check for updates that Windows Update is also checking for Office updates, when in fact it is not.  Office is not patched and the machine is left vulnerable.

How do we get this in front of the folks at Microsoft?

I can report the same issues as above. When you toggle the “Receive updates for other Microsoft Products when you update Windows” it goes right back to on. I cannot get Office MSI to update at all. This is a fresh Win 10 Enterprise 2004 build. With a fresh Office 2016 Pro Plus (installed via iso) install on it.
