• Repeating a caption on multiple pages

We’re running Word 2003 here and would like to have table captions repeat at the top of a page where tables span multiple pages. It would be even better if we could append some text like ” (cont’d)” to the end of the caption on the second and subsequent pages. Is this possible in Word? If so, how is it done?

    Thanks

You can put your table caption in the first row of the table above the table headings, and then select both the caption row and the table heading row before clicking Heading rows repeat (in the table dropdown menu). The only thing I’ve seen described for getting ” (cont’d)” in the caption is to use a text box anchored to the table text on each page. I did try it and it works, but I haven’t used it in a real document.

The way I sometimes do it is to make two tables.
On the first page I use the table caption feature so it will get captured into a list of tables (behind the table of contents).
On the second page the first row of the table has no borders, cross-references to the table caption, and then adds the ” (cont.)”. On the second table the “caption” row is then tagged for repeating.
The hard part is making sure when you have finished making changes that the first page of table just fits the space of that page.
