I would be grateful if someone could tell me how to repair Internet Explorer (given that the Repair Tool is not available under ME), or if it is possible to re-install the same version of IE (6.0 SP1) “over the top of” the current installation of IE under Windows ME.

You can re-install the same version “over the top”. This should repair IE. If that does not work tell us the problems you are getting and hopefully somebody will be able to assist.

Thanks Tony, I did the re-installation “over the top” of the existing version and it completed OK, except after the re-boot it does, I got an error … “Windows could not upgrade the file %1 from %2 … etc” (I found Microsoft’s KB 283069, but there was no wininit.ini file to rename).

The problem I have is the inability to print any emails from Outlook Express. Clicking the Print button on any email results in an Internet Explorer Script Error on Line 237, Char 2, permission denied, code 0,
URL: res//c:windowssystemshdoclc.dll/preview.dlg (I was unable to find anything on this in the Microsoft Knowledge Base)

I have of course scanned the PC for viruses using the latest data and NAV and also ran PestPatrol with the latest updates.

        Any help would be appreciated.

This sort of error message is usually caused by a bad browser helper object (BHO)

Take a look at MSKB 298931

Alternatively you can use one of these free third party tools to assist. BHOCaptor and BHODemon both let you see what BHO’s are installed and enables you to disable them.

            Hi Tony:
Have you looked at BHOCop? I don’t know how it compares with the programs you mention. I got it when it was free, but I now think ZDNet charges a subscription to download.

I have an alternative and better solution, Firefox

            • #827368

laugh. I’ve been promising myself I’d download it. Although I’ve been reasonably happy with Avant Browser, it still uses more resources than Mozilla.

Here’s a quote from an MS newsgroup on IE repair.

“If you have IE6 then you repair this via the entry for Microsoft Internet
Explorer 6 in Add/Remove Programs where the option to Repair should be
presented to you when you click to remove it. If not then the following is an
extract from KB 293907 – “How to Uninstall Internet Explorer 6”
          (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;293907) which covers
the problem where there is no entry in Add/Remove Programs and includes the
          following:

“How to Repair or Return to Previous Internet Explorer Installation

If the Internet Explorer Repair Tool Verification does not work, or if
Internet Explorer 5 (sic, should read “6”) is not listed in the Add/Remove
Programs tool in Control Panel, you may be able to start the Internet Explorer
Repair tool from a command prompt. To do so, click Start, click Run, and then
in the Open box, type ALL ON ONE LINE the following command, and then click
          OK:

          rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance “C:Program FilesInternet
          ExplorerSetupSETUP.EXE” /g “C:WINDOWSIE Uninstall Log.Txt”

Se also KB 194177 – “Description of the Internet Explorer Repair Tool”
          (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;194177) and make
certain you read right to the end especially the section below the long list
          of files.

I once Googled extensively on this. See post 292528. The poster replied that the last suggestion was the most useful.

            Hi All

Just reporting in that I have tried all of your suggestions and unfortunately, the issues remain, in that I am unable to print from Outlook Express and Internet Explorer (I may have omitted that earlier). The errors with “Windows could not upgrade the file %1 from %2” continue after each software re-installation or attempted installation of Windows critical updates.

The only difference between the IE and OE script errors is the LIne/Char being 237 and Char 2 for OE and Line 508 and Char 1 for IE, but the error is the same “Permission denied, Code 0, URL: res//c:windowssystemshdoclc.dll/preview.dlg”

Any other ideas would be gratefully received.
