It’s that time of year again, when I’m being asked to cough up real money to renew the NIS licences on the home computer, and I’m wondering whether to renew, to go for the latest edition as new, or to go for something different.

On my laptop, I run ZoneAlarm Suite. I don’t need parental controls there, but I do on the home PC, and ZA doesn’t seem to have blocking by user. I tried McAfee once, but never again, so that’s a non-starter. I like the way that NIS links parental controls to Windows accounts, but I’ve read that if you don’t log off a higher-access account (e.g. you just switch user) then you can effectively pass the rights over to other users, which seems daft.

What does everyone think? (NIS is 2005 edition, by the way)

I have no idea whether that is true, but it seems you could test it out, or have one of your kids test it out.

My own experience with Norton Internet Security 2005 is limited: I just set up the free 90 day trial for someone and worked through the firewall and other settings based on what I think makes sense based on experience with other products. If you are happy with the product, I imagine you will be even happier to have the new features in the 2006 version. I read that Symantec changed its pricing, so 2006 with an upgrade rebate might even be a better deal than renewing 2005. I think you’ll have to shop around and see what you can see.

I have been using Norton Internet Security for over a year now. Have not had any problems. I have heard that others are not fans of Symantec since Peter Norton is no longer associated with them.
My 2005 version came due for renewal the end of last month and I opted to get the 2006 version. As yet I have not installed it though I anticipate no problems. Previous posts have suggested that the previous version be uninstalled before trying to install the new version but somewhere I seem to have heard that Symantec now makes installation of the new version less likely to have problems. If I do run into problems when I install the new version I will certainly report that fact here.
