Removing bold from TOC

I am using Word 2007. One of my heading styles uses Arial Bold (which I cannot change to Arial Black). It is a numbered heading. The numbers have been formatted to also use Arial Bold. I cannot seem to remove formatting so that it inherits this from the Heading text font.

The result is that the TOC is picking this up and formatting the numbers as bold but the text in the font it should be for that TOC level. I can select the TOC and press CTRL+SPACE and it resets it, but I don’t want to do that every time. Is there a way to either let the list level inherit the formatting for the numbers so that it does not show up in the TOC or to have the TOC ignore the formatting in the headings? I thought I remembered seeing the latter in the form of a switch somewhere, but I cannot seem to find it now. Maybe it was in a previous version of Word.

You’ve probably already done this, but just checking: did you try modifying the font properties of the TOCn style to specify the font formatting you need?

Yep. That is why when I pressed CTRL+SPACE it reset to look right. Any other ideas?

I don’t have a solution (yet) but just an observation that the solution will not come from tweaking the way the TOC represents the Heading 3 content, the solution will come from fixing what’s wrong with the (flaky) way bold is working in the Heading 3 style in this document.

One bit of evidence is the presence of that “Arial Bold” font name to begin with – if you look in the list of available fonts (at least on my PC), there actually isn’t a font called Arial Bold – so the display of that font name is an artifact of something flaky.

However I tried stripping the font formatting of Heading 3 plus its related outline number, down to Times New Roman (not bold), and then reapplied Arial (with bold applied) to Heading 3. The result was that the font name now correctly displays just as “Arial”, but the bold property is not flowing to the autonumber as it should be.

As a separate test, in a new blank document I set the Heading 1 – 3 styles to have Arial (bold) font applied, and set these up with multilevel numbering as in your document. In this new document, everything works as you’d expect, where the autonumber properly picks up the bold font from the Heading style, and the TOC displays the text and numbers as not bolded.

So not a solution, but it does point to there being something flaky about this particular document (template).

Will try to take a further look if time permits later today.

To get what you want, remove the formatting from the numbering levels. The only reason to format the numbers is to make them different from the heading style. Place the cursor in the first level 1 heading in the document. Click the multilevel list icon and then Define new multilevel list. For each numbering level, click font and delete anything in the font, font style, and size boxes. The numbers should then take their formatting from the heading style.
Your doc, though, has some direct formatting that is preventing this. So in the text clear character formatting from each numbering level (ctrl+space). After that, your TOC should update properly.
