Removing a hidden module (2000)

I’ve just been installing Windows and Office on a new machine and Excel is giving me a message on loading and closing which says “Compile Error in hidden module TBRun9”.

Visual Basic shows a hidden module named “TbRun97Project(TbRun9.xls)” and it is password protected. Now I know what this is – its part of an old installation of Scansoft TextBridge which integrated with Office, and it is now appearing because my desktop is networked and has picked up an old profile from the server.

So now I am in the position that 1) I cannot delete the module because of the password, 2) I don’t have access to the old program, 3) TbRun9.xls doesn’t exist (which is why the message appears), 4) I can’t uninstall anything as there is nothing to uninstall.

Where do I go from here? How do I get rid of this module?

The file DOES exist, otherwise you wouldn’t see it in the project explorer. Check out my star post listed at the top of the main forum page. Expecially the part about add-ins and files in XLSTART.

Thanks. Yes it does, and having tried the suggestions in your starpost I was prompted to look further. What I found was that there are more than one Xlstart folders on the computer. The one I had looked at under Program Files, which contains files I expect to be there, did not have this xls but I found another Xlstart under Docs & Settings that did. Deleted. Problem solved.

I still do not quite understand why Windows would want to store this file in my Exchange profile on the server and why it would want to then copy it over automatically to a new machine is beyond me. One hopes that a clean install gets one a fresh machine only to find that all the junk you thought you’d got rid of comes back without you knowing.

There is a merit to this profile stuff: If you log in on a different computer, all your xlstart files are with you.
