I’m working on several documents that are chapters in a book. In each the author precedes each footnote with four spaces (don’t ask me why). These are easy to get rid of, just search for four spaces, replace with nothing. But with one chapter, he has put one space before each footnote. I would do a search for “space/footnote mark” and replace with “footnote mark” but footnote mark is not an option in the Replace with box. Can anyone think of a quick way to do this that would not involve manually removing each space?

Tick the check box “Use wildcards”.
In the Find what box, enter ( )(^2)
In the Replace with box, enter 2

When using wildcards, other codes are available than in a standard search.
The parentheses ( ) divide the Find what text into several parts. In the Replace with box, you can refer to the first part as 1, to the second part as 2 etc.
And the code for a footnote/endnote marker is ^2.

See Re: Find/Replace Special Characters (Word) for more codes.
