Wasn’t sure if this should be posted under Office or WindowsXP.

We discovered the ctfmon.exe impacts on performance issues with out Document Management system.

I’ve read the Microsoft KB 282599 about ctfmon.exe

We have removed from the registry. However in the Windows Task Manager the ctfmon.exe process is still running.
Is there anyway to permantely remove or disable cftmon.exe?

    thank you

I don’t know, but I simply disabled Advanced Text Services (and with that the Language Bar).

I don’t know the whole issue, but ctfmon.exe is always mentioned together with Office. Don’t understand that, since there is a ctfmon.exe on non-Office Windows XP PC’s as well. On the other hand Office IS an application that supports Advanced Text Services.

The first months after Windows XP installation, I didn’t have Office XP installed. Still there was a ctfmon.exe. In the process of setting up Windows XP with a “lean” interface and no unnecessary processes running I, as usually, found ctfmon.exe in the Task Manager.

The Language Bar can of course be disabled without the process being disabled, but in my case I wanted to stop the process as well. (And the Language Bar can of course be hidden but having working hot-keys, so there are some levels, from hiding to disabling.)

      The normal procedure is:
Control Panel > Regional and Language Options > Select Languages tab > Click Details button (under “Text services and input languages”) > Under Preferences click Language Bar button > To turn text services off, select the Turn off advanced text services check box.

      But instead I did:
Control Panel > Regional and Language Options > Select Languages tab > Click Details button (under “Text services and input languages”) > Select Advanced tab > Check the box “Turn off advanced text services”.

Or what it’s called in English, it so hard to find a KB article or screen dump in another language when you need it. smile

Doing so on the Advanced tab, will of course grey out the Language Bar button under Preferences on the Settings tab, disable Language Bar and remove it as an option on context (right-click) menu on Taskbar.

NB: I haven’t read the whole KB mentioned.

And yes, it seems having unnecessary many languages enabled can have an impact on performance.

(Edited by HansV to make URL clickable – see Help 19)

I saw reference to cftmon and remembered it from my last machine. I simply deleted it.

Since then I came across a tool in http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm%5B/url%5D tweak item # 385 which removes and restores cftmon.exe
I have saved it for emergency use. It took me a few days to locate the original.

By the way some viruses lock you out of command functions. I have read that duplicating a key file with a (.com) file type will ensure they are available.
