I need to be able to remotely connect (that is, via dial-up) to a “host” computer, such that the remote user can access data on the host, without distrurbing the user who may be working directly on the Host machine (which rules out products like pcAnywhere). It is a VERY simply (almost trivial) situation, so it requires the simplest (and least expensive) of solutions. As I understand it, DUN will provide this capability, but I’m not sure. Also, apparently I need DUN Server on the Host, but this isn’t standard with Win98 so I can’t actually test it for myself. Actual installation will probably be on XP machine.

Patch reliability is unclear, but widespread attacks make patching prudent. Go ahead and patch, but watch out for potential problems. |

AskWoody MVPSeptember 27, 2002 at 1:47 pm #620411Mark, Are you saying that both machines will be XP? Is the host behind a firewall? That presents a different set of opportunities if the remote PC has a dynamic IP address. If the host is XP you’ll need to investigate RAS I think. Have you looked at the MS XP site? Thay have some pretty good how tos.

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 27, 2002 at 5:44 pm #620487They are getting a new machine, so it most likely will be XP; I don’t know what the other machine is. There is no firewall. It is strictly a standalone machine into which they want someone else (that is, 1 person) to be able to access the information via a dialup connection. If it the 2 machines were local and I could network them, I’d make the disks shareable for the Host machine, then use a simple crossover cable to connect the two machines. But how do I make that same simple connection via dial-up?

Does the Remote Desktop Connection act like pcAnywhere. That is, you can take control of the “Host” machine? This isn’t what I need. Perhaps it would be OK if there was a separate session on the Host for the Remote user. HOwever, probably a better approach would be to Access the Host like it was a server, so I can run an application on the Remote machine and it will look to the host for data files.
