Remembering window positions and sizes

I just upgraded my home-brew computer from XP Pro to Win7 Home Premium 64bit and so far I’m really happy with it. I never got a chance to play with Vista, so all the new UI goodies are like new toys to me. However I’m really disappointed that Win7 has a bug that has stretched back to Win95. Win7 does not remember the settings for individual explorer windows. If you set the size and position of windows explorer to what you like, and then open a folder on your desktop, it will open at the size and position you previously set. XP did have the option to save individual folders size and position, and while buggy, it did work.
Well anyway, there used to be a registry mod that you made to XP to get it to remember them. I believe it had to do with the BAGSMRU entries. Does anyone know if this works on Win7? I’ve searched the web and seen a lot of chat about this, but outside of some third-party programs that will do the job, I haven’t seen a real fix for this. Any help would be greatly appreciated

After much searching I’m happy to say that I’ve found a solution to my problem. It’s a free little program called ShellFolderFix and you can find it here:

I do NOT have any problems with the pane size when I resize them.

I think you have someting carried over from you old install, there should be NO need inn having a third party program to bo basic Windows settings.

If you used Windows Easy Transfer to import files and settings from your XP setup, that could be one source of your difficulty. For example, 7 does not appear to have a Classic Windows view, but one of the user profiles I transferred does indeed have a Classic Windows view with a Windows 7 veneer. The Start button is labeled “Start”, and there are a few other carryovers.

Always create a fresh drive image before making system changes/Windows updates; you may need to start over!

This is a fresh install of Win7 64bit and while I did use easy-transfer to backup my files/settings, I have yet to use it to restore anything. I’ve pretty much been setting up everything from scratch just so I won’t have any odd carryover problems.

Let me try to clarify my rather muddled post describing the problem. First of all I have no problem with application windows, those behave just as they have on XP. The problem is with Windows Explorer windows. Here is an example:
I have two folders on my desktop, both set to display medium sized icons. Since they have a different number of icons in each, they have different sizes and different positions on the desktop.
First I open folder A and size it to properly fit all the icons and then position it on the desktop where I want it, then close it. Next I open folder B and it opens up with the size and position I just set for folder A. Now I re-size and reposition Folder B the way I want it, and then close it. Now when I open up Folder A again it has the size and position I just set for folder B. In a nutshell, Windows Explorer will only remember the size and position of the last window set. It does not remember size and position settings for all windows. In XP there was a check box you could select to have WE remember individual folder settings, but that seems to have been removed in Win 7. There is a lot of chat about this across the net. The little program I linked earlier does fix this problem though. The author has indicated that it wasn’t that hard to write, so it kinda makes you wonder about the Redmond programmers.
