Im having a strange problem with OneDrive.

Im running windows 8.1 Update 1 Pro 64bit + all updates.

On my desktop the OneDrive app works properly. It synchs as expected between my desktop and my OneDrive website. In system tray, the OneDrive icon shows it synchs regularly.

However, when I check my system in the Reliability Monitor, the reliability history shows a critical message “Microsoft OneDrive stopped working”. If OneDrive works properly, then what is the reason for this warning message? Below is the detail I get when I click on the message. This message started to appear about 13 days ago.

    Thanks for any enlightenment,

    Johannes.

      Basic trouble shooting

How do you sync your Onedrive?
Are you having issue syncing your Onedrive to your computer or mobile devices?
What is the version or operating system of the device or computer you’re syncing with Onedrive?
Are you getting any error message? What are the recent changes made prior to the issue?

Does issue occurs on all your Onedrive files or just on a specific file?
Can you edit your file via Onedrive web?
What are the exact steps you did on how you’re trying to edit your files on 8.1 Onedrive? Is it via the Onedrive client or the modern Onedrive app?
Is your PC connected properly to internet and not on a metered network?
Could you confirm if the Onedrive Sync Engine continues to run and doesn’t continue to crash? To check, Go to Task Manager, ensure “Sky Drive Sync Engine Host” process is running.
On your Onedrive app, are there errors at the top of the screen or top right corner? (Top right corner error is a link that opens the “Progress” view page. )
Are there any icons on your Onedrive client on file Explorer that indicate errors (i.e., yellow triage, red x). If there’s an error icon, look for the error at the bottom of the file explorer window or right click on the Onedrive and select “View error” and opens the modern Onedrive app “Progress” view page

If the above doesn’t help then

      Restart your system
Confirm that your computer is able to access the internet and is not on a metered network.
Confirm that the Onedrive Sync Engine continues to run and doesn’t continue to crash. Go to Task Manager, ensure “Sky Drive Sync Engine Host” process is running.
When viewing through Onedrive app: Launch the Onedrive app and look for errors at the top of the screen or top right corner. Top right corner error is a link that opens the “Progress” view page.
When viewing through the Onedrive Desktop (File explorer view): Click on the Onedrive node and look for any icons that indicate errors (i.e., yellow triage, red x). If there’s an error icon, look for the error at the bottom of the file explorer window, or right click on the Onedrive, and then select View error which opens the modern Onedrive app “Progress” view page.
Verify if the files being uploaded do not exceed the 2GB file limit in Onedrive client (Windows Explorer).
The file has a name that is not supported. Rename the file to a valid name.

Finally you can run the Onedrive troubleshooter.

      Hi ZigZag,
Many thanks for your reply to my query.

There is nothing wrong with my OneDrive. It synchs properly between my desktop and the OneDrive website. What puzzles me is the warning message that appears in the reliability history report saying that OneDrive has stopped working when OneDrive clearly hasn’t stopped working. This message appears at the time I start up my desktop. That is also the time OneDrive starts up. Seems as if at that moment, OneDrive goes through a momentary error state which makes the reliability monitor think that OneDrive has stopped working.

When I look at the Administrative Events in the Event Viewer I can see lots of messages like this “Failure to load the application settings for package microsoft.windowscommunicationsapps_8wekyb3d8bbwe. Error Code: 5 “. This start to appear at the same time as the Reliability Monitor reports the OneDrive stopped working warning message. Can these two perhaps be related?

I did run the OneDrive Trouble shooter a few times. It reported no problems.

Any more ideas on this puzzle?

      Thanks.

      Johannes.

I’m not sure if this is a Permissions issue but you could run the Permission reset option in http://www.tweaking.com/content/page/windows_repair_all_in_one.html – you don’t need to run the rest of them, but have you checked to see if a sfc /scannow run as an admin from the command prompt reports anything other than no violations ?

In Event Viewer did the Online help link give any more info for it ?

      • #1458734

Hi Sudo, thanks for your response. I ran sfc /scannow and it found no integrity violations of any other problems.

How safe is that Tweaking Tool? Have you used it yourself with no problems?

As an example, suppose that your system isn’t able to connect to OneDrive immediately upon booting.
Then the system initializes, and it’s able to connect.

In this scenario, you’ll see OneDrive errors around boot time, but the errors will disappear afterwards.
What you won’t see is the Information entry that OneDrive was successfully connected to.

Also, it can error out continually, but if it resets properly it will still connect (until the next time that it errors out).

Please follow the instructions here (even though you’re not reporting BSOD’s): http://www.sysnative.com/forums/bsod-crashes-kernel-debugging/68-blue-screen-death-bsod-posting-instructions-windows-8-7-vista.html
      Also, Please do the following:
      – open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the “Run” dialog))
      – expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words “Custom Views”)
      – right click on Administrative Events
      – select “Save all Events in Custom View as…”
      – save the file as Admin.evtx
      – zip up the file (right click on it, select “Send to”, select “Compressed (zipped) folder”)
      – upload it with your next post (if it’s too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

These reports will help us to see what WER has to say about the problem, and for us to see if there’s any other related errors in the Event Viewer (and may help us to spot any patterns in the failures).

Hi Usasma, thanks for your response and advice on what to do next. Before I get to that, here is what I think could be happening:-

When I start up my computer, the OneDrive process also starts up of course. One can spot this by hovering the cursor over the OneDrive icon in the system tray. In my case, it takes about twenty seconds or so to start up. It looks as if during this start up process, OneDrive goes through a momentary error state which makes the Reliability Monitor think OneDrive has stopped working. Hence the warning message the reliability history reports.

When I suspend synchronisation and reboot my PC, I notice that the warning message do not appear. This apparently means that in this case the OneDrive process do not need to start up when the PC starts. The momentary error state is being avoided. When I then resume synchronisation, the message also do not appear. The message only appears when the OneDrive process starts up from scratch.

Do, you think this is the explanation?

Now to your recommendation what to do in Event Viewer. When I try to save all events in custom view as… I get an error saying “one or more logs in the query have errors”. “The system cannot find the file specified”. The log in question seems to be Microsoft-Windows-Dxp-TaskRingtone/Analytic

Looking at Adminitrative events, I notice there are dozens of errors reported. The source of all of them seem to the AppModel-State with the general detail of each reported as “Failure to load the application settings for package microsoft.windowscommunicationsapps_8wekyb3d8bbwe. Error Code: 5”

        What does this all mean?

        Thanks,

        Johannes.

I ran it on two Win 7 64 bit laptops with default settings – okay on one but initially froze the other.

Reliability history reported that Windows Media Center Host Module Stopped but it managed to repair itself, although I had created a manual restore point before installing the program as I’d been bitten once before when running a tune up program, but this one has different functions and I saw that Choochin said he used it on clients computers so decided to give it a go just to see if anything improved.

Running just the Permissions reset should be okay as I’ve seen posts where others have successfully run just that after being advised, but create a restore point first as I did.

Error Code 05 is Access Denied which is why I’ve suggested the Permissions reset.

If you click on one of those errors in Event Viewer, clicking on the blue Online help link may give more info and possible solutions.

I think your analysis of the error/startup process is correct.

The communication app error is common – but I don’t know of fixes for it (I haven’t researched it).

The Microsoft-Windows-Dxp-TaskRingtone/Analytic error is common. I used this post to fix it on systems at work: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-system/microsoft-windows-dxptaskringtoneanalytic-the/5f2dd93d-c9cc-40a8-b331-e4710e19a50d

hmmm I found the relevant registry key in regedit: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionWINEVTChannelsMicrosoft-Windows-DxpTaskRingtone/Analytic

not sure if I should delete it? can it be repaired?

It appears that this particular event log has been deprecated in Windows 8.1 (and Server 2012 R2). I can confirm that deleting this registry key does fix the issue, but I exported the key first just in case.

If you can’t live with this (the OneDrive problem), I’d suggest uninstalling the app (then reinstall it if you’d like) or a Refresh of the OS.
You may lose some apps during the Refresh, but they should be fairly easy to re-install (I’m not real familiar w/Windows apps either).

I too had this identical problem with One Drive showing as stopped working in reliability monitor.
In Programs & Features I discovered I had record of the previous version being installed prior to the New One Drive coming as an integral part of the 8.1 upgrade. I uninstalled the earlier version whose name I have forgotten believing it may have clashed with the Newer version.
I had pinned to the Taskbar the One Drive Icon and controlled it from there but still got the stopped working notification. I closed One Drive using the Taskbar Icon but found by opening Task Manager it was still running. I unpinned the Taskbar Icon and commenced opening and closing One Drive from within the Start Page and by closing I mean dragging the program down from top to bottom and waiting for it to ‘flip’ – fully close. Checked Task Manager again and One Drive now not showing as running. Some weeks have passed since I started to use One Drive by the above method and I have not had any trouble or seen a ‘stopped working’ report in the Reliability Monitor. I can only believe that while using from the Taskbar the program was NOT been correctly closed and this was the problem.
        Hope that helps you.
        Regards.

        Hi Usasma,
I deleted this key and that solved the Microsoft-Windows-DXP-Taskringtone/Analytic problem.

      Hi Rupert,
Many thanks for your valuable comment. You have solved my problem. When I checked my Programs and Features I indeed found a left-over instance of OneDrive lurking there. I uninstalled it and from then on all the anomalous warning messages about OneDrive having stopped working have disappeared from the reliability report.

Im not sure how this instance got there. I imagine an update to Windows 8.1 would uninstall all older instances of OneDrive since it is now integral to Windows 8.1. But it could have been left over from Windows 8.0. During my search for a solution I followed various suggestions, one of which was to reinstall OneDrive. So, that could have been how it got there.

Anyway, now everything works fine again.

The only thing I still notice is that the C:/Program Data/Microsoft/RAC folder is not being populated by the reliability monitor system. One of the solutions to the problem suggested was to delete the contents of this folder which I did.

Thanks also to all the others who participated in this discussion for your valuable input.

      Johannes.
