I have an Access 97 back-end database with a relationships map and even when I save the map the next time I open it all the links have vanished. I can make them appear table by table with the show direct button but show all doesn’t make them appear. It wasn’t always like that. Any ideas?

      Dear Rob,

All I can say about this problem is that as far as I can remember, there

Believe me, I’ve tried everything I can think of. I have even created a new database backend, imported all of the tables, created a new map, linked the tables in the map, saved the little [censored] and heh presto – all gone again.
        I think I’ve been microshafted!

Well it must be one of those things that can’t be explained. I tried creating a new database and importing only the tables, rebuilding the relationships and this time it worked. I have no idea what I did differently from the last time I tried it but it worked and that’ll do. One thing I did find interesting is that when I imported some of the tables one relationship came with them. Does anyone know where or how the relationships are stored in Access?

Relationships are stored in one of the MSys tables in Access. The layouts are local to the database in which you create them, since they’re simply a visual representation of the relationships and not the relationships themselves.

In a split front-end/back-end database, the relationships between back-end tables are reflected in the front-end, although you won’t see the details of referential integrity there. When you import tables, relationships are imported by default, although you can turn that off by clicking the Advanced button and deselecting the relationships option.

Thanks Charlotte. I didn’t even look at those options before. It’s a form of domestic blindness. blush
