Registry Mechanic vs Reg Cure

I’m currently using Registry Mechanic but my registration has expired. I’m looking at RegCure and would like users opinion on wether I should continue to use Registry Mechanic or switch to RegCure. I am happy with my current program but there’s always room for improvement.

All opinions will be appreciated, I’m leaning toward the program I’m currently running.

I have had Reg Mechanic and am now trying RegCure.
RegCure seems to come up with a LOT of what it feels are unnecessary entries and files BUT I have found that you have to be EXTREMELY careful of what you allow it to remove. I dug myself a good hole the first time I used it by letting it remove all of what it recommended and had to use System Restore to get things back to normal.
What you have to do is only accept a few things at a time to be removed and them let it set a backup for each group. Then if you see problems, you can just restore that last small group of entries.

Good but dangerous is not good enough. I never had a problem with Reg Mechanic, so that’s where I’ll stay.

Bob, I just had to post back and tell you what happened to my computer this morning. I booted up and went to IE and the web pages were scrolling up and down and would not stop. I never heard of this problem in all my life. This applied to every page I tried to view. I tried to repair IE and rebooted but that didn’t solve anything. In Run, I couldn’t remove the program listed in the windows or use the one that was there. I tried the Command Prompt and the window opened blank. I tried to use Firefox and the problem was the same as in IE.

Can you believe all those problems and RegCure hadn’t fixed anything? I finally used System Restore and reverted back one day, the day I tried to use RegCure. The webpages reacted the same way, so I reverted back one more day and that’s what saved my bacon. I also searched the Registry and removed every mention of RegCure.. I was almost ready to format my hard drive when I thankfully rememberd that you had used System Restore. Good ole System Restore, that’s exactly why I run it each and every day, you never can tell when I’ll do something stupid again.

Let this be a lesson to all those who want to use a free program on the Registry like RegCure, one that runs the program but will not fix anything until you purchase it. It fixed my computer tis true, but not the fix was one that almost cost me a job I hate (formatting).

Thank you for mentioning how you got your computer back in working order.

Glad to see you were able to restore your system back to proper order.

As I said, RegCure can be TOO extreme in cleaning out some reg entries. You must be VERY careful when using it. I have kept it enabled but use it with extreme care and only occasionally.

But. the thing that gets me is that I used it to do a scan, but it fixed nothing as I refused to buy it. If it can do all that harm just scanning, what would it do if I had bought it and it did a complete so-called fix?

You have peaked my interest. If RegCure needs to be handled so gingerly, even by an experienced user, why do you even keep it on your system when there are numerous alternatives? What unique function(s) does it perform to warrant the extreme care you provide it?

I Do have alternatives and use them. I keep RegCure around only because it DOES delve so deeply and comes up with suggestions that other more conservative programs do not.
With CAREFUL use it is a good tool but is definitely not for an inexperienced user to accept it’s suggestions “carte blanche”.

I have recently used it to completely rid my system of Norton Systemworks and any mention of it or Symantec from the reg. A satisfaction thing. I suppose.
I think if you realize the power it has, then you are more careful in it’s use.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!

I guess that is why I have come to appreciate jv16 PowerTools or it’s little brother RegSupreme Pro because the “Standard” scan is very conservative although it does find things most others don’t and I really can’t remember ever having a problem with using the “Select” all and “Remove”. But, it also has the option to run it in “Aggressive” mode. This is where one must be more careful in choosing what gets “Fixed” or “Removed”. So, you get the best of both types of cleaning. Like many, I’ve tried various Registry Cleaners with some trepidation and with warrant. The others I’ve tried either find things which should not be removed or they list too many “false positives” for my satisfaction. Thus, I have resolved to stick with RegSupreme Pro…. that’s my story and I’m stickin’ with it!

Not trying to be pedantic here, but just want to make it clear to others that RegCure is certainly not a “free” program. You get a free (report only) scan, and that’s it – you have to purchase it to get any further functionality. It is commercial software, not freeware.

If I’m not mistaken, I think I stated in one of my posts that it didn’t fix anything because I choose not to purchase it. I could be wrong, but I hardly think so. It didn’t hurt though for you to repeat what I was trying to say, I might not have made that fact clear.

I was actually trying to point out that a genuinely free program would have not just scanned, but “fixed” the registry too. What you used was just the free enticer for a commercial program. I was trying to dispell any association of “free” with “no good”… which I think DocWatson was querying in his post too. There are good & bad in both the free and commercial flavours of all progam types, as you’ve unfortunately discovered in the case of this commercial progam. Anyway, glad your system restores saved the day.

Another name for these “enticer” programs. Crippleware . Unless they can at least give you a 30 trial period with full capabilities to really test their programs, then I delete them and don’t look back.

With the case of RegCure, I did buy the program based on a friend’s recommendation but didn’t know it was offering a crippled version to TRY it out.

I’ve just been reading favourable reviews for BeClean ware. It’s meant to be less agressive than CCleaner and many of the other registry cleaners out there.

Well, I tried Registry Mechanic once and didn’t like it all. I think you will find that there is a large consensus for RegSupreme 1.4 and the fancier RegSupreme Pro 1.4. Both are deemed one of the safest if not THE safest Registry Cleaners on the market. Basically, its the Registry cleaner from the famous jv16 PowerTools which has been around for years and received many accolades and awards.
