Regarding a new Build

Photoshop has nudged me not-so-gently to upgrade my Photoshop + database PC (WIN7, 64) from a motherboard with a hard limit of 4GB RAM. System is 6 years old and that is around my usual ‘next build’ horizon. I have a second PC used for all other on-line, e-mail, text, etc. That makeover comes later, perhaps with this mobo & CPU. The two PCs share dual monitors through a KVMS.
Question: As I swap out the mobo and CPU (and RAM and maybe the power supply etc) I thought I would add an SSD as the new boot drive (C:) and convert the current boot drive into (another) data/scratch drive. I figure with 32 to 64 GB of RAM and an SSD, of maybe 250 GB, I should be in good shape for a while. (Hardware concerns follow.) What steps must I take in what order to make the SSD the boot drive and inherit the OS and other executables, etc., while also changing out the mobo and the CPU? I intend to keep WIN7 64 on this machine.
Years ago I actually followed a Microsoft tech’s directions which required going to an MS protected cache in London to change change out a key. I’d like to get ahead of as many issues like that as I can. One doesn’t hear about that process much any more.

Replies

Perform a clean install with only the SSD attached. If the OS install disk is of OEM type, a call to MS may be needed to activate.
Your data from the old drive can be pulled off and formatted once the SSD is setup.

Pull what data you can from the old drive and reinstall all your programs on the new setup.
Programs can’t and shouldn’t be transferred. It’s better to set them up fresh, irrigardless of the hassle and effort.

I’m with you. And that phone call started in Oregon, went through India, to London and took for ever, or at least maybe 4 hours!

In CCleaner’s “uninstall” section, right click on the first program in the list (or lower right) and select “save to text file”.
They will all be saved to notepad in a directory of your choosing.
