I have a couple of external, USB hard drives on which I store some static data (photographs, etc.) for archival purposes. I’m not worried about the drives wearing out as I access them infrequently, but I am wondering if the magnetic data on the platters will fade with time making it inaccessible. Is this a real problem, and if so, does someone know of a program which I can run occasionally (maybe once a year) to refresh the data?
