I’m not sure if this belongs more in here or in GOS but figured people in here are more likely to have come across this problem.

I have just discovered that if I need to use Tools-References-Browse in the VBIDE in any Office app, the app crashes as soon as I press the Browse button. Has anyone ever come across this problem or know of a solution? I couldn’t find anything here or with a quick Google (unfortunately VBA reference browse error seems to pull up a lot of information! grin) I have done a Repair and Install to no avail and even tried uninstalling Zone Alarm on the off chance it was preventing communication between the IDE and Windows.

I don’t recall installing anything new recently but equally this is not something I have had to do recently so don’t know how long the problem has actually existed. shrug

    Appreciate any assistance!

What about VB6, does it happen there? I can’t reproduce it, since browse for references works just fine in XP SP3 on my machine. shrug It almost sounds like one of those wizard problems. hmmn Have you tried a reinstall?

Hard to say – after reading your response I tried to load VB6 (haven’t done that in a while) and it starts to load and then promptly shuts down without any error messages or warnings! grin
Thanks for putting me on what appears to be the right track. It may have something to do with the fact I have VS6, VS .net 2002 and VB 2005 Express Beta2 on here…
I’ll try removing some stuff and see if that helps.

Well, I had no joy even after removing every .Net application and framework, so I removed VS6 too, then Office XP and reinstalled and it still doesn’t work! hairout I’ve also just discovered it doesn’t work on my laptop anymore either so am now v. confused. I guess I’ll have to wait until tomorrow so I can check my work PC and see if that has the problem too.

          Wow, that sounds pretty serious.

I have Office XP Developer Edition and no error or crash. The dialog opens directly to the System32 folder on Windows XP. I wonder whether some process might be “protecting” that folder somehow? The dialog looks extremely basic; I’m not sure whether it is part of Windows or a VB object.

            Hi Jefferson,
Yes, it’s pretty weird but on the other hand it’s not something I have to do often, thankfully.
My initial thought was that either Zone Alarm or a spyware checker might be blocking something but, having disabled all of those, it still didn’t work. shrug I figure if the work PC works, I can just narrow down the differences between the two (in terms of Windows updates etc) and see if that explains it. Otherwise, I guess I’ll find time to do a complete reinstall sometime.

              Rory,

I have VB6 Pro, VS.Net 2003 Pro, Office XP Developer, ZoneAlarm, et al running on my machine. They all run and I’m not having any problems. My first suspect would be the beta. shrug
Oh, yeah, and I have Visio 2003 Pro too.
