• Reduce size of photos to email.

HELLO….. I would like to send as many photos as is reasonable [as attachments on an email] to family in Australia so realise size is of the essence so using Photo Editor I am endeavouring to make them as small as possible without losing clarity. Somehow! whilst fiddling with the pics -as the screen shots show- some are bigger than others, the one which measures 3264 x 2448 is 168 KB whilst the other being 392 x 559 is just 17.6 KB. Please enlighten me so I can make them all comparable to the last so I can attach as many as possible on a single email. Many thanks Dave.

Perspective will have a lot to do with a group of photos when you use a “batch process” to reduce the size of a group of photos. You ought to look at IrfanView – Official Homepage if you don’t already have a copy. If you change the perspective your pictures will be distorted.

Edited a short time later to add an example:

3264 x 2448 pixels is HUGE – it won’t fit on your monitor. You should resize such large pictures to a more reasonable size, for example 640 pixels wide.

Microsoft has a free utility Image Resizer that adds a resize option to the right-click menu for pictures.
Download from Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP.
Or FastStone Photo Resizer, a free stand-alone program.

There is also VSO with works with Vista and Windows 7.

      Go to http://www.vso-software.fr/products/image_resizer/
Then scroll down near the bottom, and there is a FREE download button.

Many thanks gentlemen…. lots to get my teeth into in those posts. I assume DaveA that your comment about VSO being compatible with Vista & Windows 7 does not rule out it still being suitable for MO 2003 which is what I am running! Thanks you each, I cannot emphasise too much how I appreciate this forum. Regards Dave.

          Dave,

Windows Vista and Windows 7 are versions of the operating system, just like Windows XP (which is what you have).

Microsoft Office 2003 is a series of applications (Word, Excel, …); it is not an operating system.

So the relevant question for you is not whether VSO Image Resizer is compatible with Microsoft Office 2003 but whether it runs on Windows XP, which it does. The web page says “Optimized for Windows 2000 / XP / Vista”.

I posted about VSO, because The Microsoft Powertoys do NOT run on Vista or Windows 7.

          Al,
I have NOT tried Infanview in Windows 7, as I do not really use it.
But if I get a chance, I will try it on my Beta machine.

I hardly ever use it either except for the batch image capabilities AND to make a quick web page from a bunch of photos.

It’s installed on my Vista but I never got “a round toit” on the Win 7 RC.

        Silver Fox has Windows XP.

Must respond straight away to say thanks, SUCCESS was achieved at the first attempt as I downloaded the VSO app. & at the first attempt found it dead easy to use in that I doctored / reduced no less than 10 photos with a few clicks of the mouse which surprised & pleased me very much. I sent the reduced photos as attachments to myself [and it only took a couple of minutes to transmit] BUT noticed that besides them arriving on the email as attachments, they also appeared in the body of the email too. I have noticed this in emails received from friends so they (like myself it seems) need to know how to restrict the photos appearing ONLY as attachments as I see no reason why they need to appear in duplicate. Please enlighten me further. A big thanks to all concerned. Dave.

… need to know how to restrict the photos appearing ONLY as attachments …

If we’re talking about Thunderbird, there is a menu item for viewing attachments “inline” which means they are not only attached but appear in the body of the email.

Dave – I’m not sure what program you use for email, but in Outlook, which I use, a photo appears in the body of the email if I use the Insert -> Picture… feature, whereas it appears as an attachment if I use Insert -> File…

Hi Ian…. I don’t know what went wrong here but for some reason I failed to respond to your post with a thank you; something I think is the least one should do to show appreciation. Another way – I discovered just by chance to attach a file or photo – is simply with the email minimised to the task bar and the desired attachment/s visible on the desktop, to drag it / them over the minimised email tab on the task bar which, when paused over, pops on to the screen. Without ever letting go of the left mouse button the item can then be dragged and dropped into the text area of the email, it then appears in the attachment field.

            Cheers Dave.

      Hi All

A little late but I’m new to the group. Thought a few comments might help.

If you want to send really good photos as email attachments, then you’ll want to process them manually to optimize each. You may be able to do something like record an Action in PhotoShop that you can apply to a batch of similarly taken pictures. At the least, downsized pictures usually need a little sharpening.

However, I have been impressed how well the mentioned MS Powertoy does, and the more powerful VSO. They’re great for quick and decent. And it would be wonderful if everyone used something like this for sending pictures. Especially as MP counts climb. I’ve tried IrfanView twice and both times it gave me grief.

In the responses above, there were 2 separate streams of answers – attaching vs viewing and inline vs attachements.

MS email programs tend to not actually attach but rather add the images inline when you click an attach button. IanWilson describes the correct ways to insert vs attach above. If you want to ensure end viewers can see them properly, attach is best. Some email clients mess up MS inline as they’re non-standard. This gets worse the more they’re forwarded.

What BigAlDoc observes is the view on receipt. How those attachments are viewed when received. Some email clients like Thunderbird will show attached photos under the email body, as if they are inline when they’re not. This is a convenience feature.

      Hope that clarifies.

Another great related tool is the XNView Shell Extension. It adds some features such as Right click for a thumbnail picture. Options lets you control whats in the submenu.

If you’re really sending a lot of photos, you (and your distant family) might find it much better to use a photo-sharing Web site like Picasa or Flikr instead. You wouldn’t have to worry about resizing, losing quality, guessing at how many attachments to add, or clobbering your recipients’ inboxes with too much mail.

Hi all…..over four months since I first asked the initial question & in that Time I became acqainted with the free “Faststone Capture” prog and find it dead easy to use for capturing anything on screen (including photos which, when captured) are saved as GIF files so are ideal for sending either as attachments to emails or pasting in the body of the message using the method Ian explained which is again dead easy. Quick example below…. Hi Andy, welcome to the lounge fraternity, keep on posting and who knows! you might match the posts of Hans. Regards Dave.

Certainly was Leif, my face has been up for all to see for ages, lots of grey hair and a rather pointed nose that is always wet. Not because I keep it to the wet ground not is it the common “rhinitis” but because I have a leek in my head somewhere after undegoing several brain operations. A darned niusance especially these cold days. Apart from the asnwer suggested below, are there any others for this anoying malady? Cheers Dave.

          Hi all

Late to the party as usual.

I have been using Shrink Pic (Download here) which I leave running and automatically reduces pictures as I add them to my emails. I can ony guess that I found it as a freware in these forums.

Thanks Steve……me thinks this thread can be closed now as there have been numerous free photo editing pogs suggested… spoiled for choice I would say…. as I said earlier I have been using the FastStone option for some time and find it user friendly. So thanks for them all guys… may chip in again before Christmas if another hurdle pops up but if not. Seasons greetings to all loungers & the wider community who have just been grafted in. We don’t normally close threads, unless there is a good reason to prevent future additions to the discussion. When people continue to add suggestions to a thread like this it builds up a useful body of knowledge for use by others.

            Excellent referral, B.!

I had over 35 pictures I needed to send to my real estate agent, so I came here looking for help. I downloaded Shrink Pic, saw the quick tutorial, then started attaching my photos, two emails with about 18 photos each and I was done! Shrink Pic worked effortlessly behind the scenes shrinking my photos. The original size of all the photos together was over almost 14M and the program reduced them down to a little over 3.5M!

            Incredible!!!

    • #1256174

I have downloaded Shrink Pic v1.8 and have been testing by emailing photos to myself.

At first, I thought it was working great but soon discovered that it does not copy/create the exif metadata from the original photo. The result is that some images are displayed incorrectly in landscape orientation rather than the correct portrait orientation. That’s a definite show-stopper for me!

Has anyone else encountered this problem? Hard to believe that Shrink Pic does not copy/create the exif metadata to the created “shrunk” photo.

      Feedback welcomed.
