I’m not entirely sure this is the correct area to post in but I’ll take a chance.

I deleted some photos on my Canon G11 as I thought I’d transferred them to Picasa for editing. However, Picasa was terminated before the process was complete. The photos are nowhere to be found either on the computer or of course on the camera.

After searching and trying out various software that might possibly recover the pictures I found one that seemed to have promise: PC Inspector. The problem with this and other software like it is that you have to identify the drive letter and the Canon is not assigned a drive, as was the case with my Nikon which was always L: It is simply identified as CanonG11, no drive letter assigned. I’d sure appreciate any suggestions as to how I might possibly recover those photos from the camera. Thanks.

First, assuming the photos were (are) on a removable SD card, I would take that card out of the camera now and use another one for the time being.

Second, if you have an external SD card reader (or an internal card reader, which is included with some PCs and laptops), you probably have a better chance of accessing the card as mass storage, with a drive letter. There might be a way to configure the camera for that (e.g., changing from PTP mode to the older mode), but I’m not very familiar with the details.

At that point, I think you are dealing with a FAT32 file system, so regular undelete software might work. There also are programs targeted specifically toward photographers. This article lists a couple of free ones: How to recover deleted photos from your SD card | ZDNet.

      Any luck?

Edit: Some “professional” SD cards include recovery software, if you are in the market for a new SD card. E.g., SanDisk 4GB Extreme SDHC Memory Card SDSDX3-004G-A31 – B&H Photo.

Thanks a lot for this jscher. I’ll see if I can find external/internal card reader on a computer or laptop soonest but failing that it seems like a good idea to have an external card reader on hand. Will post back and let you know of my luck. Thanks for that article at the CNET reference.[/size]

Great news!! And thanks a million for the help. I got my external card reader, downloaded a couple of software recovery programs and the second one I tried – Pandora – as recommended in the CNET article you referred me to worked! It not only recovered pictures from my Thanksgiving weekend but photos I had taken as far back as May of this year on the Toronto Island. So thank you …

Thanks for posting the update. I hope I never need it, but it’s good to know which software worked for you.
