Hi, My brother and sister-in-law have a mac that died on them and they want to be able to recover the photo’s off the drive. Is there a way to get their data, mainly there photos off the drive. Can they get a external hard drive and install the OS on it and get a data recovery program to try and salvage their photos? I have been able to do it on my PC but I am not familiar with mac computers. They are not tech people and they can’t afford the big bucks that a data recovery lab wants to charge for retrieving their photos.

On a Windows system you might try HFSExplorer or MacDrive by Media Four. If the drive is more corrupt and can’t be read then only getting the drive attached to another Mac system with a real recovery tool designed for Macs may serve.

Thanks F.U.N. downtown, So I can download the program to my laptop (win7) ans hook it up to their mac, or get a mac external HHD and put the program on it and plug it into a USB port. She said that when they start up the mac it goes gray and something spins onscreen or something like that and shuts down. I have to run for a few hours and will be back later.

Very difficult to remotely diagnose, but the question is whether the entire drive is failing, or if the OS has corrupted. Macs allow booting from the OS CD; you insert the CD before powering up, and upon hearing the “bong” sound, holding down the C key on the keyboard, until it is clear that the CD option is working (give it at least 3 minutes). If it boots up from the CD, it is likely that the photos are intact, and could be copied using a USB stick. The CD will have an option to reinstall the software if it sees the hard drive as well as have some disk recovery options.

Open the machine and evict the dust bunnies.
      Reseat all connectors 3 X.
      Check heatsink grease.
Power-up and make sure fans turn.
Boot up if possible. Recover photos.
If you have to, use an external fan till finished.

You can try the above given steps by Philomel, to get back your photos from HDD. If you don’t get success then you can use Remo Recover utility. It will surely bring back your photos.

Data Recovery software proves to be an optimum tool to recover lost or accidentally deleted files and folders from file systems. The tool, Data Recovery is suitable for repairing corrupt FAT and NTFS file systems. Using this software it is possible to recover data from external hard drive partitions, formatted or re-formatted hard disk, corrupt Windows registry and even from damaged hard disk.
