recover changes made to Word Attachment (2000)

We had someone open an email attachment and make many changes to the document. She saved when she closed Word but sounds like she didn’t say yes to saving changes to Outlook because when she went back into the attachment, her changes were not there. Is there any place on her computer that might have a backup or shadow copy of the changes she made? Thanks

The KB’s referenced to in the link unkamunka gave, may not give an accurate location – for example it did not give a location for my OL2002 running under XP.

I find the easiest way to find where a file may be temporarily stored in Outlook, is to open it, and then click on
File > Save As…
and as per the attachment below, by clicking on the drop-down box, you can work out the full path, which in my case is:
C:Documents and SettingsmyusernameLocal SettingsTemporary Internet FilesOLK79

However, Windows Explorer – for me at least – will not show the final folder, i.e. no sub-folder below the Temporary Internet Files. To get it to display this folder, navigate to the TIF folder, and then manually add the “OLK79” to the path in the address bar. (You may need to have the “Display the full path in the address bar” option selected in your Explorer Folder options.) This will then show the contents.

In case the Word document *is* there already, I would recommend NOT opening it up from the email to locate the path, just in case it overwrites the ‘saved’ version. Use another email with an attachment and follow the same procedure.

YMMV but my experience is that unaltered documents are stored in the Temporary Internet Folders address that you mention. In the example you give, you have not altered the contents in the slightest.

Altered documents are stored in the Folder Addresses that MaryJ gave – hence the response I gave to the OP – as the document had been extensively edited; triggering (on the face of it) Word’s Autosave feature.

AFAIK the reason for the two locations is that unaltered documents will disappear when the TIF cache is cleared. The second location comes into play (if one knows where it is) as a form of backup.

(Somewhere into the mix comes document versions being respected by the use of suffixes: Leif.doc, Leif(1).doc etc etc)

Hmmm!
Well, the registry key in my OL2000/XP system here at home points to exactly the same folder as the one I find by opening an attachment and trying to Save As….
And emptying my TIF – through IE’s Internet Options > Delete Files – leaves the contents intact!
But as to where where AutoSave saves opened attachments, I haven’t a clue
