I have large database that has been working great for the past year. Just within the last few days, I start getting a record locking message. They database is used by a lot of people and I have check all the options under the Tools, Options, Advanced. It seems to have started acting funny when I added a new person to the security group. Could this have caused anything like this to happen??

Please help. I have some angry users out there!!!

Odds are it’s one of your users who is starting edits and then leaving them hang for an extended period. Are you using Edited Record Locks or No Locks as you locking mechanism? And are your Locking messages coming during edits of an existing record or when inserting new records?

I am using no locks and I have a timer built in that if there is 15 minutes of idle time the program will boot them out. The message seems to be appearing when we are adding new records. The program allows users to add employees to a roster for current courses offered. We register for our own courses so no one should be entering for my courses. We do write to the same student table but this has never happened before…why now??

Could I not be refreshing soon enough or updating the number of retries (under tools, options, advance)?

It’s a bit stickier problem than that. Access 97 only supports page locking, not record locking, so when you insert a new record, it locks the page once you begin adding the record. There were some improvements in one of the service packs, so if you aren’t on the most current you should probably get there. But unless your record is large enought to prevent storing two or more records in the same page, you will probably continue to see some locking messages. Probably the best solution would be to upgrade to 2000 or 2002 where record locking is supported.
