Recommend cloud-based club photo-management sites?

Hi all,
I belong to a service club and am looking for a cloud based club photo management site

We would like to have a repository of the club photos in a readily accessible, controllable and easily maintainable manner.
Many of our members are older and have very limited web expertise but they do want to use it.

What we would like to see is a hierarchy list of photo folders, possibly by yeae and then event/topic
Under that would be an easily managed set of links to each folder/topic that the user could navigate.
There should also be a search capability – e.g. “Group Photo”
Clicking on a link (folder) brings up icons of the pictures with captions
People would then have the ability to view a photo by clicking on it and/ or downloading it (or multiple photos)

There should be authorization rights by users (and possibly password):
. administrator to create folders, delete etc
. Authorized ones to upload photos
. Users to view and download
. Users to view only

Also – being a service club, we want to minimize costs (not being cheap but would sooner have the funds go to the various charities etc. that we support), but we are able to pay.

We have already looked at a number of options but I am throwing this open to all (and would be receptive to other places where I could post this)

I recently contemplated changing my online photo album and after looking at the alternatives I ended up staying put. Basically the existing options are pretty limited in layout and function, so the only way I can see to do what you want is to run your own software on a cheap host.

Have you considered Flickr? Plenty of space and the facility to create groups. You will need to have a yahoo email account. However, it might not fit your requirements – as Paul says, to get what you want exactly is likely to cost; free is always a bit of a compromise.

Paul, you never said which online album you use.:D

No, I didn’t – it’s a free one with not many features and almost no customisation, annoying ads for things I don’t want and lousy access controls, but it’s better than the others I looked at and uploading from my PC is easy-ish.

I’m not sure if you’ll find this article helpful or not. The trouble seems to be that many of the sites have one main administrator and are not set up for multiple users going in and out at ease through the system. If you find one, please let us know, because I know of a few groups that would love to use a photo site like you’re describing. Good luck!

Willing to pay? A photo club I sometimes look at uses Zenfolio. See prices & features at http://www.zenfolio.com/zf/all-features.aspx?loc=en-US. Seems to allow both public and password access. Check out the Field Trips folders or the Events folders for example.

My husband set up such an account a few years ago but I don’t remember all the details. However, the webpage does have several folders, categorized, icons, etc. The person who set up the page/account (administrator) could also authorize access to users, whether they could add, view, etc. Good luck!

This may not be exactly what you are looking for, but I’ve set up Photo folders for several non-profit groups using Yahoo groups. You can set up the Yahoo group under your club’s name and define permission levels. Yahoo doesn’t provide a lot of options in the Photo folders, but you can create albums and add photos to them, define access rights, etc. The only downside is that the photos are only viewable once you are inside the Yahoo group. There is no public access; only group members have access. But for my non-profits, that serves their membership’s needs. See https://help.yahoo.com/kb/groups to learn more about Yahoo groups.

celkins, does that mean that the members each have to have a yahoo account in order to access/interact with the photos? If so, I wonder how many people would sign up?

ErinWalsh, my previous experience with yahoo groups – yes, you have to have a Yahoo acct in order to interface within any yahoo group. Hey, do you remember the olde days of ListServ?

I fail to see why no one mentioned OneDrive. I set up an account similar to what they are looking for and gave each user the login information. Worked like a charm, and now that Microsoft has blown the lid off of the storage, it just makes sense. Oh! and the best part. IT’S FREE
