Recommend cloning program?

My husband is looking for a free cloning program, to clone an existing harddrive to a new SSD, which will be running the operating system. This should be availabe to do it for a Windows 10 computer and a Windows 7 computer .

He used to have Casper which worked , but that is now a payable program.

I hope that someone has some good suggestions for a good program???

Personally, especially when going from HDD to SDD, I’m not a fan of cloning {remember y’all I said Personally}. My recommendation would be to take an image backup using a product like Macrium Reflect Free {again a personal choice}, make the boot media. Now change the disks in the computer then boot from the media you made and restore the image.

Aomei Backupper will also do it, and Paragon and….

What we are really saying is get a backup program and backup your data, then you can use the same program to move to a new disk.

Note: Windows 7 may not correctly identify and configure an SSD. See this thread for details on checking W7 is behaving.

This is what I have always used to CLONE my Linux hdd to another. That said; Macrium Reflect is a great program and can do this as well as image and restore to another HDD or SSD. :cheers:

Certainly true with Samsung SSDs.

You would install the Samsung software on the running system, connect the new SSD externally and run the cloning. Then shut down, exchange disk drives and boot from the cloned drive.

Worked EVERY time so far (dozens…).

If the new SSD is smaller than the old HDD then I recommend to use Macrium Reflect Free.
Create the Restore media,
verify that you can boot it(!),
create an image on your external backup HDD (NOT the new SSD!!!),
remove old HDD,
install new SSD,
boot the Recovery media (with external backup drive connected!),
restore image to the new SDD
and reboot the system.

Sounds much worse than it is – and good luck.

I just recently put in an SSD into a Dell D630 ( which, despite not having certain speed-up programs, really hops along) and found the Samsung cloning program could not find the external HDD I connected with a USB 2 IDE/SATA connection assembly. Luckily I had installed Macrium REflect and used it with the same connection to clone the disk with no problems. The new disk was slightly thinner than the old one and required a little tweaking to connect properly, but after that, no worries, mate!

I noticed that several SSD manufacturers (eg.- Kingston and Sandisk) supply a spacer to make up for the thinner solid state drives.
