Recalcitrant address book (XP)

My hard disk crashed so I had to install windows and office on a new disk. I did recover outlook.pst (thanks to the god computus) but although I can access my contacts via the folder list I cannot find them when composing a new email and clicking on the To button – i get this message – “the address list could not be displayed. The contacts folder associated with this address list could not be opened …”
Any ideas anyone?

Right-click the Contacts folder.
Select Properties…
Activate the Outlook Address Book tab.
Make sure that the “Show this folder as an e-mail Address Book” check box is ticked.

You can also try Tools | E-mail Accounts…
Click “View or change existing directories or address books…”
Click Next.
Make sure that the Contacts folder is listed,

I had already tried the second suggestion and really felt that your first suggestion would work but alas…
any other suggestions?
