Rebuild with NT4 or 2000

I have to rebuild my hard drive to fix the partitions. I can re-install NT4 or 2000. I’ve had NT4 for several years on my desktop (Dell Optiplex). It runs with no problems and things don’t crash. I have 2000 installed on my laptop (IBM Thinkpad). 2000 seems to crash fairly often. I’m not sure if the 2000 problem has something to do with the sleep and laptop or if it’s just not as stable.

I’d appreciate any opinions, advice about which O.S. to reinstall.

If all of your hardware and software will run under 2K if would for it. I ran it for a couple of years before XP and it ran quite well for me.

I agree whioleheartedly with Dave. Microsoft makes a compatibility tool that can check for these things (hardware, etc). If anything, I found NT to be far less stable than 2000. So much so in fact that when our division certified 2000 as a platform for development, I vehemently request that it be installed on all systems going out. That is, the ones that I have anything to do with.

2000 is what NT wanted to be when it grew up – there is a wider range of device support for it as well, although being an NT based OS it still has pickiness in regards to certain hardware devices. Using NT you should be well acquainted with that!
