I want to read Open Office text documents (extension ODT) in my Microsoft Word 2003 SP3.

Do I need to configure something in Word 2003 to accomplish this?

Do I need to install an addin in Word 2003, if so which one and where do I get it (Is there a free addin that will do this or do I need to buy something) ?

Do I need to do something similar in Excel 2003 SP3 to handle Open Office spreadsheets?

You need to install an extension, as the “Open Document Format” is only supported as of Office 2007. I found this link to a free extension but I have not tested this extension.
