Hello, we have a new server running Server 2003. We have a ‘Front End’ and ‘Back End’ database. When we open the database from a workstation on the new server or from the the new server, we are in ‘Read Only’ mode. However, if open the database through the old server, it works fine. All permisions on the new server match the old server.

Can someone give us some ideas on things to check? Running Access 2000 / 2003. Backend is 2000 – most workstations are 2003.

    Thanks in advance!
    KST

Make sure that the user has full permissions (read/write/create/delete) on both the folder containing the frontend and on the folder containing the backend.
Also make sure that the frontend file is not read-only (you can check this in Windows Explorer).

Hey Hans, we’ve checked that already. When I created the active directory of users and groups all the settings are the same as old server, but I have been reading up and windows is saying that even though folders permissions are set right that the ACL or ACE in server 2003 default permissions on new groups could be overriding the folder permissions. Im still looking into it. Thanks for your help. Let me know if you have any more thoughts on this!

You might also try moving the front-end to a folder on the workstation, and see if that still leaves you in Read-Only mode – I suspect it still may – we usually can get WinServer 2003 to behave by setting the folder permissions, but WinServer 2008 is a bit more picky and requires a fair bit of tweaking to get Access databases to be updateable. FYI, we normally use SQL Server as the backend as we get more control over security, and avoid issues like you are encountering.
