    BEST PRACTICES

Reaching into your desktop system remotely

    By Patrick Marshall
Sooner or later, people who work outside the office discover that some critical document or bit of data was left back on the desktop.
Cloud storage can help solve that problem, but remote-access apps/services connect mobile devices directly to a remote PC.

Thanks for the info on Logmein. I switched to this last year (LMI free) and have used RDC to handle situations where I need to transfer files.

I had used Teamviewer in the past, but they became ridiculously aggressive about trying to force me to pay $800 for their commercial version (the dreaded ‘commercial use detected’ popup). Despite their lies, Teamviewer will generate this popup after only a few connections made (probably in a short period of time, like a few days). For example, I was trying to fix a few of my family’s computers remotely (and those required several reboots and reconnections), and after only about 10 connections, I was already getting ‘commercial use detected’. After a few more of these, it will limit connections to 5 minutes max. Good riddance, Teamviewer. Your greed will be properly punished in the marketplace.

You can immediately switch your subscription from trial to free. On the home screen if you look to the far right of the line for the computer you will see the word properties. You can click on it and in the new screen that comes up you can click on subscriptions and change your subscription to free using the drop down box on the end of the line.
