Re-install/repair 2000

Still having problems with getting Net working so thought I would try a re-install from within Windows (from CD) Reinstall keeps stopping telling me there is an installation process that needs to be completed first – no useful details but opening logs I get the following message:
Examining disk for adequate space expand the WinDir.
Drive D: acceptable for final installation directory.
Existing software was not fully installed. To fix this problem, click Details.
Direct Music Driver

Steve, look for a file called wininit.ini which should be a hidden file in the Windows directory. Rename it, and try the re-install again and see what happens.

Part of your Windows installation was not completed. First, check Devise Manager (Windows+Pause/Break keys, Hardware tab, Device Manager button) for errors – especially under “Sound, video and game controllers”. Reinstall/update any problem drivers (marked by yellow exclamation sign).
If it’s not the case, reinstall (or update) DirectX ( from Microsoft DirectX 9.0a End-User Runtime).
If you still get an error – destroy your installation and install Windows once again.

Can’t see any Device Manager problems and can only connect to the Internet using my sons computer. Thus any updates cannot be carried out as the computer needing the updates cannot connect to get them (a true catch 22). Can’t find a corporate download of Direct X so cant go with your suggestion – but thanks for your interest

In the device manager you need to select to show hidden devices from the view menu option. See if there are any problem devices here.
