I have a friend with a Gigabyte GA-8PENXP motherboard. He set up his HDD’s in RAID using the motherboard chipset. He used RAID 0 (for speed) now the motherboard has failed. Can he use any other RAID adapter to recover the data from the disks?
If not, how can the data be recovered?

Unfortunately, the BEST method is to find another system/RAID Card from the same manufacture to recover the data. This is not to say that you can not use another, just the best.

A Quick Google search for raid 0 recovery or raid 0 recovery software yielded some results.

I have been fortunate in that the systems I have had to work on, we had backup hardware either the same or from the same manufacture that worked.

If you don’t have a recent backup then your best bet is to find a PC with the same motherboard.
