I’m trying to find an application, that will run on a typical corporate network, which would allow anyone that can see the application to enter information and then everyone can see that updated information, in real or near real-time.

Specifically, I want to track radio traffic from our trucks. A typical scenario is at 8:05a.m. truck 42 calls and states they are enroute to 123 Main St., at 8:20 a.m. they call and say they arrived. At 10:00 they call and say they are going to 456 Maple st. and so on. I need an application that anyone on our network who answers the radio can enter that information and then everyone could see where truck 42 is at any point in time. Oh, having a field for a note with each radio call would be a big help.

Running this in a web browser would be easiest for most of our users.

    Any ideas?

I suspect that what you’re after is one of those things that looks trivial but when you got into in the detail turns out to be best served a complex relational db.

I’d hazard a guess a friendly web developer who can work magic with PHP and MySQL will be able to rustle up something for you.

If you prefer to “roll your own,” what you describe is very similar to a basic “guestbook” script, of which there are numerous examples in books and on the web. If you need to edit past entries or restrict privileges or connect to other systems, then you start to get into features that would justify a more extensive search.

Assuming you are using a Windows server with its bundled IIS web server, you probably would find it most convenient to use the ASP scripting language. There’s a sample guestbook script for ASP in the bottom section of this page: http://dev.jeffersonscher.com/index.html%5B/url%5D. It can be customized with any fields you like. It’s helpful to have MS Access in designing this site because the pages use an Access database.
