Very sad news today of the passing of The Queen of Soul. My favorites, her rendition of Carole King’s Natural Woman, and her performance in The Blues

My favorite has to be her duet with the late George Michael in the 80s, “I Knew You Were Waiting For Me.” Another good one from back then was “Pink Cadillac.” I remember listening to them on the school bus on the way to/from high school, when the driver would put the radio on to a requested station to try to soothe the savage beasts that are high school students.

Many great moments over the years. Appearance in the Blues Brothers always a fave, but her performance of A Natural Woman at the Kennedy Center Honors in 2015 is really spectacular; especially when she drops the mink coat, a standing ovation. What a voice, what a talent, what a life. RIP Queen of Soul.
A very, very long time ago I heard her sing the old gospel song “Oh Happy Day” made famous by the Edwin Hawkins singers. Edwin Hawkin passed away early this year. It certainly is not a happy day today, though. She was probably the first American performer to become known by just her first name alone. Aretha – a National Treasure always. Her music and her performances are legend and will live on forever. God Bless her!
My sister who I just talked to today is 5 1/2 years older than me. I grew up listening to her as my sis bought all the 45’s back in the day. Aretha is Aretha. Gee Whiz….. the first thing that ever comes to mind to ANYONE that says the name Aretha, would of course be Aretha.

Miriam Anderson, Muddy Waters, Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin…
When their music ended, when their singing stopped, they left a great silence.

It’s funny, when I saw the sad news, her performance in The Blues Brothers was the first thing that came to mind, as that is one of my all-time favorite movies. My branch manager had never seen it. Thankfully, the Blu-ray was in, so she checked it out and can enjoy hearing Aretha sing to two men “dressed like Hasidic diamond merchants”, one who wanted “four whole fried chickens and a Coke” and the other who wanted “dry white toast”, about what her husband needed to think about.
One day a few of us girls formed a lineup and blasted out “Respect” in the middle of our school courtyard. Aretha was one of the best, beauty inside and out. Watched Aretha in a PBS interview with another great woman opposite her asking the questions, the late Gwen Iffil. Aretha was refreshingly candid as always, humble, saying she is just like any other woman. When Ifill asked what sets her apart from other women, she added, “I’m not that different, I just love to sing that’s all.” There’s a light that shines above us all tonight, rest peacefully beautiful lady, and thank you for the gift of your presence and voice.

It’s a sad day indeed. Usually I’m not that concerned when a celebrity passes away but a few are really very special and Aretha was one of them.
I’m old enough to remember her early days when we only B&W TV in the UK and 3 channels only, so it’s like I almost grew up with her.
RIP Aretha

one of my favorite Aretha Franklin songs (w/ George Michael) when I was a little kid back in the 1980s
