I have used Quicken personal finance software for years to provide a single interface to keep track of bank accounts, credit cards and other assets and liabilities.  I find it helpful to manage bills and income and maintain digital check registers.  Several years ago Quicken changed its services such that the standalone version no longer provided a single process to download activity for almost all of my accounts (a problem still exists with automatic downloads of Amazon store card activity).  To continue this service an annual subscription to the online version of Quicken was required.  I therefore changed to the online service.  A week ago I started getting an error message stating the Quicken download server was not available and to try again in 10 minutes.  This blockage continued for several days.  All other functions that I regularly use continued to function without a problem.  I believe the problem began with an automatic update of Quicken.

I though that one possibility was a corrupted file, so I attempted to reinstall Quicken.  The reinstall process proceeded to uninstall the existing version and then attempted to install the latest version.  During the install process and error occurred.  An error message popped up that Quicken needed Internet Explorer version 6.0 (!!) to be first installed and an error occurred during that install.  Unfortunately the existing version of Quicken was deleted during the process and is no longer available for other working functions.

I contacted Quicken support and was advised that Quicken needs the latest version of Win 10 to run.  Despite the current AskWoody recommendation to delay the March update, I went ahead and did the update.  This did not solve my problem.  The Quicken support agent put me on hold to “check on the issue” and never returned with the call eventually dropping.

I am looking into alternatives to Quicken but what I’ve seen so far doesn’t blow me away.  I would rather try to get Quicken working again.  I am running 64 bit WIN10 Pro on a Dell desktop with an intel Core i7-7700 CPU.  My operating system and programs reside on a 2T SSD.

Has anyone encountered these or similar problems with Quicken reinstall or Internet Explorer 6.0 install?  I would appreciate any comments/suggestions/help.  Thank you for your time in plowing through this post.

You make me feel SO glad that I am still running Quicken 2002.

I wish I could also go back but the one step update service, when it was working, was a real timesaver for me.

I have not run into this issue using the new subscription based Quicken, but I have only ever freshly installed Quicken when doing a clean upgrade of Windows. I can’t recall ever uninstalling the subscription Quicken. I’m currently running Windows 10 Pro 20H2, which was a clean install. I’m patched through the February cumulative updates and am still waiting to install the March patches. All of the in place upgrades of Quicken since I went to 20H2 (there have been two or three) have all gone smoothly. I have the occasional issue where I can’t connect to one of my financial institutions, but those have been problems at the financial institution and not with Quicken itself.

From Quicken asking for IE6, that makes me think you might have remnants of the old, stand-alone version of Quicken still installed and that somehow has confused the subscription Quicken installer/uninstaller. I did some quick research and Quicken does offer an uninstaller/cleaner download for Quicken, although it warns that you should only use it at the direction of Quicken support. Perhaps you should look into this? This is the link I found. I have never used this procedure so I cannot speak to its efficacy.

The only other thing I can think of for your original problem: is your subscription actually up-to-date and active? I think all of the download from financial institution functionality goes away if your subscription lapses/ends. I know I’ve almost been bitten by this because the credit card I use for the subscription has been changed and I almost forgot to update my profile with the new card information before a renewal. If your account has lapsed, this would be your root problem. I don’t know if the Quicken tech you spoke with would have had access to whether or not your subscription was active.

If you decide to go through the instructions in the link above, be aware that they ask you to rename “Intuit\Quicken” folders. If you do have remnants of a stand-alone Quicken on your computer, those instructions make sense. What’s not clear to me is whether or not you should do the same folder renaming for the subscription Quicken, whose folders don’t live inside an Intuit folder.

      Good luck.

I’m still using Quicken 2001 !! Fresh installs on both W10 1909 and 20H2 with no problems so far (fingers & toes crossed). I’m happy entering data manually so have never used online account sync.

Just in case, I’ve parallel tested KMyMoney, which I would be happy to use if I ever lost Quicken. I believe there are online banking options, and you can import QIF files (though there may be initial reconciliation issues if you have interconnected accounts).

If you don’t mind, how did you do your fresh installs of Quicken on W10 1909 and 20H2?

      I would like to move Quicken 2010 from Win7 to Win10 20H2 if possible . . .

      Thanks!

I have an original Quicken disk and was very pleased when it installed and read my old files (copied over from W7) with no issues. If you don’t have a disk for your version, depending which country you’re in, you may be able to obtain/download one online, though I can’t say whether your old files will transfer or if you might have to rebuild some accounts?

I apologize as it seems I did not post a message that I had solved my problem.  While trying all manner of suggested fixes without success (thank you all for your input) I set things aside to finish my federal income tax filing.  I had already installed TurboTax and entered most of the needed information.  When I went to open TurboTax from a shortcut, my system gave me a message that it was trying to re-install TurboTax which then failed because it needed IE6.  When I double clicked on the associated file, TurboTax opened without a problem.  At this point the Quicken install routine was no longer a suspect for my Quicken problems.  I then concluded it was WIN10 itself that had become corrupted.  I did a WIN10 re-install using the process that preserves all settings and data.  This simple fix solved my problem and I was able to install the latest version of the Quicken subscription program.  It (and TurboTax) have been functioning as expected ever since.

In reply to the question from opti1, I keep all of the installation routines that I purchase either as downloads or with physical media.  I also keep all of my registration codes.  You can generally get fresh installation routines through an internet search and if you haven’t kept your registration code you may be able to retrieve it them from where you made your original purchase.

      Thanks for your response!

I also have the original installation disk for my copy of Quicken 2010, as well as the update patches through #9.

Did you just drop your v2001 install disk into the CD drive and let the install run from there?

It sounds like you did not need to set Compatibility Mode for Quicken to run, correct?

Did you apply any additional patches to your v2001 after initial install or are you just running with what was on your install disk?

      Thanks!

Exactly as you say. Original disk, CD/DVD drive install, no compatibility mode set, just ran it and it worked. Phew!

Can’t give you any more info as you’re using a newer version.

        Good luck!

Thanks for also addressing my questions in your response to TonyS!

Yes, I have my original Quicken 2010 install disk, as well as one for v2016, and also a downloaded file to install Quicken 2013 if necessary.

I used Quicken for years, and then moved to Ace Money. The reporting was rather poor on Ace. So, this year I went to OlderGeeks and discovered KMyMoney. This is a very awesome (and free) personal finance solution. Frankly it blows away all the paid solutions. AND it is being constantly updated.

The reporting is great and allows a tremendous amount of flexibility.

I also use Scheduled Transactions in lieu of budgeting. Effectively this is the same thing but allows me to extrapolate income and expenses over multiple years. Since I am now retired this is a great option. I can easily balance my SS income against my RMDs on my IRAs to completely minimize my taxes.

I would suggest taking a look at KMyMoney. See: https://kmymoney.org/

I agree. Although I’m still using Quicken I have road tested KMyMoney and consider it a viable alternative.

KMyMoney appears to be European based. Does it produce the required info / take into account the US tax situation?

      cheers, Paul

Several currency options, can’t help with tax questions! Here’s a link to the user manuals in various languages (including both UK and US English)

To Moonvew:Try this to repair Quicken. Go to file. On the drop-down menu go to file operations and then choose validate and repair. Click on it and wait until it completes. When it’s done you’ll see a log of what occurred.

***Before you do anything, backup what you have, just in case something goes wrong. This option has always worked for me. I hope it works for you.

      Peace, CAS

      To CAS,

Thank you for your interest and suggestions.  As I indicated in one of my above posts, my problem turned out not to be Quicken but a WIN 10 corruption.  I used Windows reinstall option that saves all data and settings and was then able to re-install the latest subscription version of Quicken.  All is now well.
