    Dell Windows 8.1 laptop

Total Defense Internet Security Suite is on this computer
    — It pops up once in a while claiming it’s scanning and sometimes it’s doing some maintenance
    — There are many folders in it’s location in Program Files but I don’t trust it because I can’t open it up to view any settings or determine the results of any scan or any other feature
    — The computer runs very slow and I suspect this program is involved

Action Center reports that Windows Firewall is on and that there isn’t anti-virus or anti-spyware protection

Googling results in some results that indicate it’s a good program but there are not very good on it and it appears it’s very difficult to uninstall according to
    http://softwareuninstall.blogspot.com/2015/02/total-defense-internet-security-suite.html

Is it possible it’s actually a “rogue” program that has no business being on the computer?
    — Does anyone have an uninstall recommendation so it makes my efforts easier to get it done?

Most internet suites are an impressive collection of Swiss-Army knives; many modules offering one from a firewall to browser cleanser, and everything in between.
All of that, if fully operational/fully real-time ON, comes at a cost.
The see-saw of user functionality at one end and security at the other end has it unbalanced at the security end.
One has to decide how to balance both ends of this see-saw.

That product doesn’t appear to be rated by AV Comparatives. I’d dump it and choose from one that is tested.

How to uninstall Total Defense Internet Security Suite using Removal Tool

It appears to be a legitimate application from a legitimate internet company, but like many “all in one” suites, they
can run through a lot of resources.

I’ve gotten a bit fed up with some of the “Total Security” products. I recently replaced AVG with BitDefender because AVG was starting to annoy me with all the features that kept getting in my way. Now I find that I just have a whole new collection of features that keep getting in my way – actually they are basically the same features with different names.

@Paul, that’s a very interesting graph and I’ll be glad to show it to my friend

      @Clint
, that’s exactly what I was looking for: it’s removal tool
      — I suspect you are right that it is a legitimate program but because I couldn’t find what settings it uses it doesn’t appeal to me and I’m not interested in reading their tutorial
      — Somehow I suspect it came with the Dell computer and my friend said she had paid for it but she never renewed it: so it still runs but it isn’t in “updated” mode and I never trust anything like that anyway
@gsmith-plm I understand your points very well.

Graham: Can I suggest Trend Micro Maximum Internet Security? I have found it not to be a resource hog, and not to get in your way, yet it is highly rated, and it has done an excellent job for me.

Trend Micro doesn’t score very well on the latest AV-Comparatives Performance Tests

and it’s Protection in the latest AV-C results (September 2015) is marred by a lot of false positives.

Not obvious from a quick glance at that page (or several others I visited). Why would they not put a note as to how it worked?? Dumb maybe even dumber than me! :p

Been there, done that, it is as I said not obvious. Glad to see AVG is not too bad.

I’ve been using the free Panda AV for the last 4 months or so. It did score well on the last AV Comparisons and isn’t intrusive (a popup every several days to upgrade to a paid version which I just close out).
