What is the RECOVERY drive listed under “Protection settings” in my Win 7 64-bit computer? I ask this because, after reading Fred Langa’s piece in this week’s Windows Secrets, I tried to see how much space I had allotted to System Restore (my computer has a 1 TB hard drive and 8 GB RAM). I do make occasional images with Macrium, but for years I have depended on System Restore on a number of occasions and have almost always been happy with the results. When I went to see what my System Restore settings were, I noticed that there was a separate setting for System Protection for RECOVERY, which I had apparently set to “Turn off system protection” (the other options were “Restore system settings and previous versions of files” and “Only restore previous versions of files”). I was puzzled, since I thought at first that that setting had disabled System Restore, but that wasn’t true. I had a number of System Restore points. Nonetheless, I was nervous about leaving “Turn off system protection” and decided to change to “Restore system settings and previous versions of files” and to increase the maximum space allotted for system protection from the minimum 2% to 10%. But then I saw that under “Available Drives,” RECOVERY was turned on (it had been off), and creating a system restore point for drives that have system protection turned on would now include not just my C: drive but also the RECOVERY drive. I don’t think that’s what I want, but I realize that I don’t understand what the RECOVERY drive is. I’m tempted to go back to my earlier settings: “system protection turned off” (which apparently applies only to RECOVERY drive) and 2% disk space allotment for System Restore. First, though, I really would appreciate some help in understanding what the RECOVERY drive is and whether I can leave it turned off.
